... of speed about it. Late on this morning, I stumbled across a mother deer with a tiny doe trailing behind her. I was surprised they didn't sense my presence sooner, but once they did they were off like a shot across the fields. I managed to take a photo of them but it was only when they were far away enough in a field to risk looking back at where I might be.

All in all, it was a great day to be walking the Via Francigena.

... br> My host arranged for me to stay in la Mairie (town hall) of an even smaller village, Corbeil. They are well used to hosting pilgrims, for whom they provide a camp bed and sleeping bag in a room labeled 'Salle de Pelerins'. They knew roughly when to expect me and five minutes after I arrived a guy turned up with a basket containing my evening meal and breakfast for the next morning. ... led off across the country side, through various villages, across fields and canals, and into some of the WW I battle areas.

We stopped at the Cabaret Rouge cemetery near Arras where over 7000 soldiers are interred, including a lot of Canadians. Almost overwhelming to walk along the great rows of headstones, about half of which have no name, but only "KNOWN TO GOD".

To get to Frejus by Wednesday we had to pick up the pace, so opted for the motorway. ...

Leaving Orleans we drove mainly through gentle rolling hills of farmland and forests to Auxerre with little traffic on the road. Exploring the old town we came across the flamboyant old clock tower built in the 15th century on the foundations of the Gallo-Roman perimeter wall. ... and things to see and do. Heaps of interesting shops, bit to early in the trip for much shopping but loving what I see. Not many people speak English - so far not having a huge success in translating but alas pointing and laughter seems to help. I Spent the afternoon at a beauty salon - manicure, pedicure and massage was just what I needed to recharge the batteries. Back to the Irish pub (James Joyce) for our final dinner with Tania as she leaves us when we get back to Paris ...
