... and got some fresh hot waffles, shaped like the Cathedral with melted chocolate on, and some delicious Stollen. It was a one hour drive to Vaals / Holland. A cute little town. We had dinner at Mo'ment, an interesting little resturant. Duck was the speciality. Matt had huge ribs and H a vegetarian lasagna. Hotel Kasteel Bloemendal Vaals was where we stayed and it was lovely. 18C restored manor house, and we were in the renovated wing.

Well our holiday in Europe is coming to an end. We left Arnhem and crossed into Belgium. Our destination Bastogne. There is where the Battle of the Bulge took pace in December, January 1944.  The Town was occupied by the Germans but was taken back by the Americans in April 1944. Hitler wanted to recapture the town to enable them to reach the Belgium coast. The Germans recaptured the town and from December through to January a fierce ...

The group was large with a few very well behaved German children, it was a long walk and no complaints from them. The ranger only gave the talks in German but a nice man with reasonable English tried to give us the gist of them once we started walking again. Anyway the forest is beautiful to look at and we got onto some muddy hiking ...

... t seen before. The cafe onsite uses the produce from the gardens in their food. Unfortunately I only found this out after we had currywurst at the reconstructed 1960s pub. Don't think I'll have currywurst again, it's not bad but it wasn't good either. Stables and barnyards had animals. Karen was showing some of the German kids how to feed the horses and cows grass while their parents stood back and watched, obviously not prepared to get their hands dirty and slobbered on as she ...

Sad to leave this campsite by the river. Everything has a artiste's touch, more like a private home than a campsite. Made me feel quite guilty leaving skid marks in the grass, but happy we managed to get onto the campsite roadway without needing a tow. More ups/downs/bends as we headed towards the Belgian border, with wee hamlets every mile or so. As soon as ...
