... couple of 'bonus' climbs before we arrived at the river. The route out of Besancon was a bit more trafficky but we managed OK without getting lost or losing each other! Once clear of Besancon our route has been a delight - mile after mile of undulating empty roads through a mix of woodland and farmland. Near the end of our day we came across a road closure at a railway bridge but fortunately the diversion was quite short.

Woken up by loud hooting, turned out to be the travelling bread van on a Sunday morning!

Not a lot in Vouecourt, a fountain house and a very old church.

Our Next stop was Langres, it is a fortified hill town. Walk part of the walls.

... Balesmes Tunnel. It is a one way tunnel, 4823 meters long, about 8 meters wide, plus a tow path on the side. It is well lighted. You are supposed to wear life jackets, turn on your navigation lights, and a few other things, but there is no one around to check that you do. The one way traffic is automatically controlled with your remote clicker that activates the locks. When we clicked for entry the red light turned green and the notice board said Go ...

... thanks Tony - to help source somewhere for me to stay last night. The place he found was only 11 Euros and the profile picture of the owner on the airbnb website gave a passing resemblance of a mad axeman (not my words!). While not unduly concerned about this description, I was surprised that the directions to his address were somewhat vague - "walk slowly down the main street for five minutes, then ask ...
