... pines and mélèze, the heat and the scent from the pines reminded us of Lacanau. The road surface is excellent for most of the ascent, and there is a marked cycle lane on the right hand side of the road. It doesn't get much better than that!
From the elevation profile we were expecting a constant climb, but after a few kilometres the road levels and there is a slight descent before climbing again, offering some respite for the legs.

We walked down to the modern part of the town to the L'Eclerc, to buy provisions for our stay as we found ourselves in a self-catering apartment. Who can resist a French supermarket? This one had a good selection of bike spares too. We bought porridge for breakfast, some tea and a few other treats to keep us going.

... a right turn onto the D83 and a final 8 km ascent of the day to Aussois. I've come to the conclusion that ascents at the end of the day's riding are a really bad idea.
By this time the weather had turned showery, which meant trying to keep dry and cool at the same time while continuing uphill. I opted for cool, and didn't put my jacket on and so got a soaking and chilled again as we arrived into Aussois.
