... pines and mélèze, the heat and the scent from the pines reminded us of Lacanau. The road surface is excellent for most of the ascent, and there is a marked cycle lane on the right hand side of the road. It doesn't get much better than that!

We stopped in an unwelcoming café at the other end of the tunnel, to drink hot chocolate and get some more layers on. Setting off again in the rain, it didn't seem to get any ...

... a right turn onto the D83 and a final 8 km ascent of the day to Aussois. I've come to the conclusion that ascents at the end of the day's riding are a really bad idea.

By this time the weather had turned showery, which meant trying to keep dry and cool at the same time while continuing uphill. I opted for cool, and didn't put my jacket on and so got a soaking and chilled again as we arrived into Aussois.

The hotel du Soleil is a ...
