... extreme at grabbing Jeff's wrists to attempt to sell him a bracelet (because God knows what would have happened had they grabbed my wrists like that in front of him). I haven't experienced merchants this pushy since Egypt. I guess it is just an example and reminder of the way tourism can surface ugly actions by those who are desperate.
All-in-all we had a really romantic evening with the gorgeous view of the city. Despite the trash, and the metro rations that wreak of urine, Paris ...
... chase eventually wasted an hour in to and fro wild goose chases, by which time the lunch reservation I had made in Paris had expired. None-the-less, we eventually found the train and arrived in Paris, and with good humour fully restored, the adventure began. We strolled through the Jardin du Palais Royal, past the Louvre, across the foot bridge to the Musee d'Orsay (if only we had the time -- there was a Bonnard exhibit ...
... and certainly drew the crowds. Unfortunately it also meant the hawkers were out in force, as were the pickpockets (the signs were everywhere here as they have been throughout Europe to be aware of pickpockets) so we didn't stay as long as Max would have liked (his preference would be to watch this busker all afternoon, rather than darken the doors of another cathedral!) but nature also intervened and the rain that had held off for the past hour or ...
... Invalides building, so we visit to see the Military Museum that it now holds. Originally built by Louis XIV to look after invalided and aged soldiers, it must have been one of the first examples of Social Welfare by the state. The Museum is a great visual record of French military history, but is completely overshadowed, both inside and out by Napolean's Tomb. This gold drenched dome is amazing and was perhaps the highlight of the whole day. Leg weary we return to our hotel about ...
... Peter the Great built Peterhof to try to outdo Louis and I think he may have succeeded with the Peterhof palace. The Hall of Mirrors is of course the most impressive room at Versailles, but I think the main ballroom at Peterhof is larger and even more spectacular.
But with the gardens, Versailles wins hands down. I had seen pictures, but until you’re there you don’t appreciate the scale of the Gardens of Versailles. It’s over a kilometer from ...
