... had said it would rain further south) and felt a bit optimistic!! Well, our hopes were dashed when a bit before 1pm it started to pour in earnest. We had just passed St. Marcel, the last village before Conques, and when the path diverged from the road, saying 30 minutes to Conques, we took it hoping it would be quicker. We had to descend 300 metres from there to Conques, and after we were past the point ...

... years ago..... Well, signs of life at reception so we have checked in and found we have our own little chalet - lovely, and we go down to the auberge near the church for dinner....AND there is a laundry here, so Amr has charged off with all our clothes to be first in!! We consulted the book, having learnt from yesterday, and found that there was an initial steep climb and then a walk up high which could be avoided by walking along the road. But this time we CHOSE to climb, as it is a short day, and we did notice another small climb at the end, which just ascended for the sake of it and then came down to the same road, ...

... is Espalion. Well, setting out from St. Come and knowing Espalion was about the same altitude, we expected an easy 7 km stroll. That was the problem, we faithfully followed the GR65 (rather than the road which we realise would have been rather boring, but flat and only about 6 kms. The GR65, which is the Chemin de St. Jacques, took us up over the highest hill between there and Espalion, winding round, up and down, in the total wilderness. It was beautiful but extremely ...

Amr says he thinks today was the best walk so far. It was again gorgeous countryside. The book said "moderate" today rather than easy, and I think it was because we had to descend right down a mountainside on rather uneven stony path. In fact I think we have just crossed the Aubrac mountains, having been high up there for the last few days. We left leisurely as it was only 17 kms, and turned out to be 18, but the shortest day so far. Left at 9 ...
