    We are finished with day 1 of our hike! Beautiful scenery the whole way. This portion of the hike followed a single lane paved road for about half the day so it didn't feel remote.     ... Renee is the slowest of our group, but is steady and always arrives at our rest spots soaked with perspiration but smiling. Today we learned that he is 72, so he's doing an outstanding job. We are on the top floor/ attic room with 12 mattresses running beside each other in a single line, reminiscent of New Zealand and Tasmania. The showers tonight weren't hot, but not cold either.     ... a right turn onto the D83 and a final 8 km ascent of the day to Aussois. I've come to the conclusion that ascents at the end of the day's riding are a really bad idea.

    By this time the weather had turned showery, which meant trying to keep dry and cool at the same time while continuing uphill. I opted for cool, and didn't put my jacket on and so got a soaking and chilled again as we arrived into Aussois.
