After breakfast Dave and I opted for an optional excursion which took us on the Ardeche Steam Train. We enjoyed a scenic ride along the Ardeche Mountains. The train took us to places that tour busses could not. We saw spectacular views of waterfalls, gorges and deep valleys. There also was an aqueduct built to store and provide water for the region. GThe cave has 60 km of known passageways but we were only to do a few hundred metres. 248 steps took us down into a huge cavern with lots of interesting formations, galleries and amazing basins which were used to give a light ...

Day 26: the downpour the previous afternoon accompanied us right through the evening and only broke in the morning. The afternoon and evening cruise down the river became a light show as lightning continuously lit up the sky and the heavy rain of storm proportions made the journey very different. Day 27: The morning brought grey skies and a river cloudy mist and a problem for the captain as we tried to dock. The heavy rain and strong following ...
