... low and behold we found the IJ-Hallen Flea Markets, which are a market held every month in a very old warehouse formally used for NDSM ship building, over the other side of the harbour - with over 700 stalls. Perfect! Elle needs a raincoat and Paul and I both need gumboots. We were getting a little sick of having wet shoes every single day, especially in the cold weather. A perfect recipe for a cold. So after a delicious home cooked breakfast of mushrooms, spinach and olives ...

... yesterday had told us so much more about the architecture and the city I was very happy we had taken your tour. We did get to see the harbor and where our ship had dropped us off. There are 2 beautiful new museums out in the harbor - the Eye and the Nemo - the eye is a cultural center and the Nemo is children/science. There are many restored wooden boats docked there - ...

... incidental in this road mayhem - survival of the quickest. No helmets, texting or chatting on mobile as you cycle along. There were people everywhere - amsterdamians sure do love the night life. We girded our loins and struggled up the road a bit further and stopped at a restaurant for a feed of mussels and snails. Had long chat to the owner - everyone is so friendly and ready for a chat - or perhaps we just chat to anyone!!! Back to our room with aching feet. Try the tram system ...

... the girl we had met on the coach waited with her at the other end and we were all united! The hostel is very central, actually in the red light district. We are in a mixed dorm of ten and the bathrooms are clean so I am happy. After we had dumped our stuff we went to a coffee shop that Kate's friend recommended and tried our first Amsterdam spliff. I'm not a weed expert but it was ...

... Museum. It focused on the Netherlands during the second World War and their actions to work against the Nazi occupation. Jer and I weren’t really sure how big the museum was going to be or what it would all entail, and we ended up spending 2.5 hours there. There was so much to read and think about. There were lots of first hand accounts on what happened to people and their stories. At first the Dutch people were under the impression ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel de Lantaerne Amsterdam

    Excellent Friendly Hotel

    from

I just stayed at the Hotel De Lantaerne from Monday to Friday and was very very happy with the quaility of the hotel for the money i paid.

The hotel is situated in a great place, along the canal and very central with trams near by. The atmosphere in the area of the hotel is superb.

The staff in the hotel were very helpful and friendly and there is a bar downstairs that is open almost all night which serves food!!

The hotel is also immaculate with everything you need in the room and the delicous breakfast is a real bonus which is included in the price of your room!

I visit Amsterdam every year and will certainly be staying at the Hotel De Lantaerne next year and the following years after that!

    A Hidden Treasure

    from

I stayed in this hotel in February, after spending a few nights closer to Centraal Station in a 4 star hotel, this one surpassed my expectations.

    Charming Hotel

    from

I have been in Amsterdam about 20 times and have found that the Lantaerne Hotel is way above average for the price you pay. The staff are always polite and helpful. Yes, there are steep stairs, but that is Amsterdam. I always request a room no more than one flight up. They also have a few rooms on the entry floor. The location is wonderful.....right on a canal...and a few steps to the tram. Breakfasts are good and the hotel is very clean.

    Very friendly hotel

    from

I stayed at the Hotel Lantaerne 2 weeks ago over the weekend.

Amsterdam itself is a beautiful city and the weather was perfect as well. Hotel De lantaerne is a very friendly hotel with great staff and basic, but clean and nice rooms. A special thanks to the girl in the reception who gave us a lot of useful ideas of what to do during our stay.

We lived on the fourth floor with very steep stairs up to the room, but it actually did not matter, just good to get some exercise (!=) but I would not recommend this for older people.

Overall, Lantaerne is a great hotel and its location just could not be better!

    Thank you very much!

    Best wishes,

    Ann from Finland

    Great Hotel....great value

    from

Small, quaint hotel, with a friendly staff, willing to share information with you. On the advice of the hotel owner, we visited our favorite town on our Honeymoon....Brugge, Belgium...and we would have never known about it if the gentleman at this hotel did not tell us.

This hotel is totally Amsterdam and totally Europe!!! We enjoyed our stay!

    Love the Lantaerne

    from

My partner and I have stayed at this hotel a number of times at various times of year, most recently in November 2002 and February 2003. The staff have always been extremely friendly and very helpful. The hotel has been undergoing renovations (most recently the front desk/lounge), but has a charming "Old Amsterdam" feel to it. The stairs are steep, so this hotel is better suited to people without much luggage! There is a delicious breakfast available in the basement.

    Charming hotel, bit noisey tho

    from

I stayed at this hotel in 2001. I thought this hotel was absolutely charming! It has a wonderful owner and operator, the staff friendly and helpful, and an excellent location. The stairs were steep but I didn't mind. Room no. 14 was ever so charming with the small balcony and french windows overlooking the canal, although the carpets were a bit worn and burned. The breakfast room was warm and sunny, inviting, quiet - absolutely European. The breakfast generous and tasty. Of course, there are lots of young party people staying at the hotel because of it's location. This is to be expected I think. Also, there was some party noise from the Melkweg, again this should be expected when a hotel is centrally located in a 'party district'. However, I would definitely stay here again. Thank you de Lantaerne! I had a great time!! and don't forget to buy the very nice owners a big bouquet of flowers.

    De Lantaerne: totally Amsterdam

    from

This is the perfect hotel for those who travel light and do not mind

walking up a steep flight of stairs. Located just a block from

Amsterdam's premier night life area, Leidseplein, on a little dead-end

quay at the intersection of two canals, right across the water from a

police station, the hotel has more Amsterdam atmosphere than almost any

other. And although there is 24-hour entertainment at a stone's throw,

it is quiet enough to sleep with your windows open.

We found the staff friendly (to kids and adults) and helpful, the breakfast ample, the beds not great but acceptable, and the clientele varied and interesting. And again, you can't find a better location!

    Awful Hotel--Awful staff

    from

When we got to this hotel after a long flight, and walked up the even longer flight of stairs--I cried. what a hole! to top it all off, a few months later, I noticed they had charged my credit card again. It took me three months to get AmEx to fix this. The hotel never responded to them either.

I say they are a bunch of criminals.

    Hotel De Lantaerne

    from

We just got back from Amsterdam.

The Hotel De Lantaerne - one of the lesser hotels - one step above a youth hostel - gouged us for over $160 a nite. This was 50% above their standard "rates" and twice what they advertised online.

We questioned the increased rate when at check in. Unable to find alternate sleeping arrangements (we were there for some meetings and flew in on a red eye). We were stuck with the much too high price.

I truly do not appreciate the last minute price jackings by third rate hotels (others in the hotel had a larger room and paid less!!!)

Beware traveller - stay away from Hotel De Lantaerne - lousy rooms, rates run the gamut and you too could be caught paying 4 star hotel rates for a dump!
