... We had very, very tasty snails in the first course, then Paul had rabbit and I had lamb in the second course (also very tasty). Paul had a cheese plate, with a selection of sheep, goat, and cow cheeses. I had a dessert: bananas and chocolate in a filo dough purse. I thought it was good (not great), but Paul didn't like the plantain-style banana. We also had a bottle of excellent Beaujolais. Lovely meal, about three hours of good food and good company. Then back to the room for ...

... to start the day. The rest of the time we spent wandering around Epernay, popping into Champagne bars, eating nice food, looking at the buildings etc. We didn't even get to Reims as we loved this place so much. Oh well, I guess we'll have to come back again - perhaps in summer next time. This stop was a very unexpected highlight and has certainly cemented France as our favourite country. Next stop Bruges - its in Belgium (from the movie In Bruges).

After that little soiree, into the brisk afternoon for a walk through the town. Well, the parts near the champagne houses. Into a cave, literally, stocked with what seemed a million different varieties of champagne. Checked out a few of the selections on offer, but decided we'd find Tanneux-Mahy, the last champagne from the afternoons tasting. Found the street with no problem (a little village on ...

... I could cook dinner. After about an hour Emma started to feel a little bit of a pain in the stomach, and after a while had decided that there wasn't a need for any dinner for her. Considering that it was still raining I headed to the little restaurant on the site and after looking over the menu I was pretty set on the pizza. However it was a little busy, so I offered to come back in half an hour, and was told that this would be great! After two more trips back, I finally got back to ...

... cheeses for me at ... Starting to get tired of ham! Drove to Verzevy to the Phare (lighthouse) and climbed the 112 steps to the top to see the 360 views of wine country. A quick trip through their mini labyrinth and we were back on our way to Reims, trying to get back in time for the houses that closed in the city at 7. We arrived back at about 4:30 and found out it was too late for any of the tours or tastings even in town. Despite the 6 or 7 pm closing ...
