Majestic Mont St-Michel

Leaving St-Malo after another walk through the town in the morning, we made our way towards Mont St-Michel, following local roads along the coast, through tiny picturesque villages, quiet in the morning. A stop in Cancale had been recommended, and despite high winds and cloudy skies, we entered this little town right on the coast. Far, far away over the water, seemingly floating above the horizon, the distinct shape of Mont St-Michel was visible, a tiny spec in the distance. It seemed improba...

A Thousand Years of History in One Morning

Waking up to dry skies but a constant threat of rain, we had breakfast at the hotel, then left on foot to go visit Bayeux. Always ahead of the game, I had bought in Mont St-Michel an excellent "GeoGuide" for Normandy, and it contained all the details I needed to plan the visits we wanted to make. First stop in Bayeux, the Cathedral. Medieval (of course), but greatly damaged in World War II and since restored, it was to be our first real encounter with how much history was part of Normandy. Th...

En route to France

[End of Trip Disclaimer: Now that we're home, my inclination is to edit this travelogue to fill in the blanks, add more sightseeing or historical details, correct my grammar, spelling and typos and generally make everything more coherent. But I'm going to resist. What you have before you is the way it was! We created our travelogues with the excitement of the day's experiences upon us. And on foreign language keyboards! And in dark internet cafes with raucous music in the background, inhaling...

Another invasion

Got to sleep in a bit this morning as we weren't leaving the hotel till 9:00. The doors on the shower stall worked, but the stall itself is one of those where if you turn around, you knock against the faucet lever and end up completely changing the water temperature.

I tried to make a phone call to Paris this morning to confirm my shuttle reservation (I was given explicit instructions to call two days prior to pick-up), but all I got on the phone was a “boop-boop-boop” nois...

I might electrocute myself

Well, my little prefab shower room didn't work so well. The room must have been tilted just enough because the water from the showerhead would land on the rim of the tub and then cascade over the side, even though I kept turning it toward the wall. When I was done with my shower, the bath mat was a sodden mess, and the floor was completely covered in water. After I
finished using the bath towel I put it down on the floor, and it took about four seconds for it to be completely soaked. I was...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Hotel d'Argouges Bayeux

Ideal spot

from SMPG
Recently stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. The hotel was charming, a good continental breakfast taken sitting in the sunny garden was a perfect start to the day. The room was clean and comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful.Being able to park in a safe area and to be close enough to walk into Bayeux especially in the evening for a meal and a drink was a bonus especially for 2 women taking the car abroard for the first time.

Unhelpful and Rude Staff

from CityVu
I made a reservation and subsequently cancelled it. However, my credit card was still charged.

When I called to rectify this mistake, the hotel staff was rude and unwilling to help me resolve this problem. I asked to speak to the hotel director about this and was told that he did not speak English. When I mentioned that I can speak French with him, she replied that he was not available and that she did not know when he'd be in. She refused to leave him a message and simply said that I'd have to try again.

My unfortunate experience with the hotel was frustrating and disappointing considering the good reviews it has received. I suspect that should anyone have issues during their stay that they would run the risk of being handled in a similarly rude and uncooperative matter.

A Charming Hotel in a Charming Town

from LeslieBlonde
Our family of 5 was very pleased with our stay at this old and charming hotel. The staff was excellant! They were always willing to help me with anything from finding a good restuarant to calling to get reservations for horseback riding. We had a very large family room on the second floor. It was right above the dining room (we woke to clinking of dishes each morning), but at least we never missed breakfast. One of this hotel's attributes is its location. Being right on the main street, it would otherwise be a very noisey place to stay. Fortunately, Hotel D'Argouges is set back beyond a flowered courtyard with a yet another garden and private parking behind it, making it well insulated. Bayeux is a lovely town, plently of shopping, good restaurants, museums, history and proximity to many sites. A laundrymat is located just across the street and 1/2 block down. Bayeux also has a McDonalds when needed for homesick kids. The only reason I can't give this hotel "excellant" rating is the bathroom. There is a tub and a non-mounted shower nosel - quite a challenge!

Returning to Hotel D'Argouges each day through it's fragrant courtyard of flowers is a memory of France I will never forget.

Tranquillity, courtesy, convenience

from SPenguin
Friendly, helpful, courteous staff. Comfortable, quiet rooms. Simple continental breakfast. Centrally located off the market square, very peaceful, lots of parking, pleasant garden. Not surprisingly it gets booked a long way in advance.

Super place. Nicely priced. Will definitely be going back.

An excellent biker friendly hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
If you are on a biking holiday and looking for somewhere central to town that has secure parking for your bike, then this is the place! They have a huge workshop/garage building in the grounds which the owners positively encourage you to use. The breakfast is out of this world, and lots of it. The owners, husband and wife, are vey friendly and nothing is too much trouble should you require any thing. We frequent this place with about a dozen bikers, once a year for a long weekend and have had no complaints yet!

Excellent Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Spent three nights in Bayeux as this Hotel and I must say it was wonderfull experience. The staff was very friendly. The rooms were bigger than I expected and the bathrooms were modern. We had an excellent view overlooking the front courtyard too! In reference to the single negative review, the breakfast isn't required so what is to complain about?? It's the same typical breakfast throughout Europe!

Anyway, had a great time at the Argouges and really enjoyed Bayeux as well. I have already recommended it to friends!

Quiet rooms

from RodenbachRuss
Set back from the road off a charming courtyard, all the rooms are normally quiet. However, if the next morning is a market day (Sat & ?) and you're on the courtyard, make sure to bring earplugs as they begin setting up early. Rooms are smallish and basic but have all the normal items. The building itself is charming and the reception/breakfast room is classy. Recommended.

Very pleasant break at Hotel d'Argouges

from A TripAdvisor Member
We read both previous reviews just a few days before our trip last week so approached this hotel with trepidation! We found it very convenient, with good parking facilities, even though it was in the centre of town with all shops, restaurants and places of interest very close by. The hotel was an old manorhouse so has lots of character and is set in colourful and well-tended gardens. The main building and annexe are set back from the road, so there was no noise at any time. The rooms were clean, elegantly furnished and airy with high, beamed ceilings. There was a very deep bath with a shower handset, lots of hot water, basin and hairdryer in the bathroom. The breakfast was plentiful, consisting of orange juice, apple compote, 4 types of bread/pastry, butter, honey, jam, marmalade and a choice of tea, coffee or chocolate. The staff were very polite and friendly. It was particularly good to be able to go out and eat (and drink) in the evening without having to consider driving back to the hotel.

Supplements? Come on...

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed at the d'Argogues after reading the review here and was stunned at how this thing got a positive review by anyone.

The property is located next to one of the main downtown parking lots in Bayeux, located in a courtyard behind an entry arch in the wall.

This means the property itself are two nice old buildings with pretty timber roofs and a decent guarden, and you don't feel like you're on the main road. That's the good part.

The bad part is that the value proposition here is awful. I paid Eu64 for a twin bed room that was run down, with the highlight of the room being a hand shower since they couldn't spend $5 on mounting it. No shower curtain, of course. Beds were fairly uncomfortable, and the light curtains didn't close entirely.

Where I moved from disenchanted to annoyed was on the breakfast. You pay Eu8 for a very basic continental breakfast - awful orange juice and a croissant. Anything else is a supplement...including butter for the toast, or even something basically french like cheese for your baguette (Eu2). I have NEVER seen a supplement for something this basic. Come on.

There are many better B&Bs out there, and for quality like this there are much better prices. This is basically a Eu40 hotel that's overcharging dramatically. Don't stay here.

Definitely wife approved! Best in Normandy

from A TripAdvisor Member
We spent 2 weeks in France, and toured many of the major regions. This was by far our 2nd favorite hotel on our trip, and if you factor cost: the #1 favorite! (this because our favorite hotel was in Loire and $200/night). At Argouges the staff goes above and beyond in service. When we returned after dinner, the man at the front desk was helping a couple find another hotel in Bayeux, because Argouges was full (of course it will be full!). Book WAY in advance. We redesigned our trip to work around their availability. The included breakfast (continental) was the best we had in France; my wife loved their hot chocolate and croissants. The room is spotless and charming. Parking is a breeze. Beautiful grounds and decor. Location is excellent. Wonderful walk to the Tapestry: Many nice shops, bakeries, and restaurants along the way. The cathedral is also on the way to the Tapestry. I write very few web reviews because I'm lazy. We liked this hotel so much that we are compelled to tell others about this gem. We were sad to leave; next time we will extend our stay!
