Our house, pt. 2

Here are the promised photos. I am not including photos of our workshop room and wine cellar; they're not that interesting. Excuse the messiness of parts of the house. You all know how trying moving in can be!

Tracy has left for France to inspect food production plants, so I'm here ...

Our new house, pt. 1

... graham cracker crust) to bring over to our landlord's house. Hannah is her name and she is our nextdoor neighbor in addition to our landlord. Slight of build and very friendly, Hannah lives alone but has frequent company. When I showed up with the Heidelbeeren Pie (blueberry pie) she invited me in to enjoy it with her and her daughter, who was asleep on the couch with her little dog, Bobby. "Eating and sleeping on a Sunday ...

So much furniture, so little money

... br>
Tracy and I drooled and fantasized about much of the old furniture we saw, some of which can see. The photos, I swear, do not do the actual piece justice, since I used a 2-megapixel camera on a phone. We were at once excited and dolorous at the splendor of it all: dolorous in that we could reasonably afford none of it right now; excited in the idea that at three year's end we will most likely be able to beautify our future houses with an variety.

Until next time!

My Henry

Meet Henry, my Mercedes-Benz. He's an odd fellow; nice enough, if a little cranky; advanced in years. We don't communicate so well yet, even if we are both obviously making efforts. It's that I can't always read his signs clearly. He lags when I want to move quickly, and when I want to play it safe, he jumps. I never know which button to press to get the reaction I want, and sometime he acts confused. For now, I'm chalking it up to generational and ...

Days with Henry, Helga, and Frau Chatterbox, pt.1

Last Tuesday was to be the day we would move into our little German castle; the day when the dust would every so slightly begin to settle from our transition to military life; the moment in which life would start its crawl toward, quoting W.G. Harding's presidential campaign slogan, "a return to normalcy." Harding didn't deliver on his promise after the war, and neither did the day. The morning started ...

Drinking and Going Bad

... settled, we headed out for dinner. I had that magical travel experience where you discover a brand new culinary deight. Get this- neuer wine, or new wine. This stuff is aged for *1* short week, then served in pint glasses. It tastes like Mike's **********ade. Me likey.

This morning we set off northbound up the wine road, or Weinstrasse. Here is what you do- you drive to a teeny German wine village, park outside a vinter's ...

Bingen and Rhine Cruise

... transportation barges and tourist boats. Almost all of the transportation barges carried a small car on their deck, although we weren't clear what its purpose was (drive around at the destination or drive back home?) It was also interesting to note that for much of the way, a railway line and road lined the river, sometimes on both sides. It seems as though this transportation route is a very well ...

Leaving on a jet plane!

... me to "BK" as the local Americans called it. I ended up spending about a month in BK, once again, gearing up for more military operations. We used our free time when we got it, but to be completely honest with you, we didn't have the ability to get out the way we would have liked. Instead, we took in the local sights and sounds and of course, enjoyed the beer! It's strange ... being in ...

... friendly with the wine! (made by one of the guests of course). After lunch drifted into snacks drifted into dinner, and after i'd exhausted myself relaying my adventures in German, we headed off back home. And then, lying on the table just asking to be ravished was The Emperors New Groove...quite possibly one of the finest pieces of cinema in existence. Except that it was in German... My soul died upon ...

First stop: Frankfurt

... home parties of all our friends :) This time we were both actually sober! Amazing! I don't think we stopped talking at any instant through our Frankfurtian Apfelwein, Rippchen mit Sauerkraut und Handkase mit Musik or any other point of the evening. Catching up about lost loves, weird parties, past memories and future plans. I wouldn't have want to start my trip anywhere else!
