... down the fishing houses . When the Abby had the extra floors built up they had to make thicker columns for support and built around the original columns. When restoring the Abby they have carefully cut away half the columns so you can see the early ones as well. The Abby was very isolated as you can only reach it by sea. In winter it wouldn't have been a great place to live, very cold and very hard for boats to enter in the inlet making life there very isolating . We were ...

Well, we never really planned on going to Genoa. Actually, the beauty of this trip is that we didn't do any planning at all. Ok, that’s a lie. Genoa is a city of contrasts. It is still very much a commercial and banking hub but its location invites tourists (like us) and cruise ships to stop for a few days. There is a small historic district but much of the city is relatively new. With lots of banks! Today, being Sunday, it was clear which came first. Very little was open. But we started out with a plan (I can hear those who know me well saying 'of ...

... desk recommended an "authentic" restaurant for lunch and that it was. Everyone seemed to be a local and it was quite interesting. Two pastas, 2 water, 1 caprese salad, bread, and a half litre of wine for 17 Euros. After our traditional afternoon rest, we walked through old town Genoa to get our bearings. Genoa has 100 Palazzos (42 designated ad UNESCO World Heritage sites), 44 churches and a bunch of art galleries and museums. It's original claim to ...
