Gliwice, Katowice, Poland gawolik89... where the gas chambers once stood before they were destroyed. The eeriest part about being back there was not seeing the destroyed gas chambers and crematoriums but to still be able to smell ash. That was rough. I do not think I will ever be able to understand what makes one human being ever think or be able to do anything cruel like this to another person. It just made me sick. We left the camps at nightfall and headed on the bus for another hour to Krakow...
Birkenau, Poland cali... a few minutes here as the doors were locked, but there were some strange statues of characters from Polish folklore in the area which gave us something to laugh at. Agnes partner Michael joined us after lunch (known in Poland as dinner) for a few hours cycling in the nearby countryside. While this was probably a boring run of the mill cycle for my three hosts, I found it really fantastic. Over nearly three hours we cycled through beautiful pine forests ...
Belk, Poland willShe said: Wall after wall of faces, lists too long to count of names, piles of glasses, mounds of hair, stacks of suitcases, heaps of clothing, mountains of shoes, even pots and pans. That is what's left of the people killed in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Our visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau brought to the surface feelings I have never encountered before about people I didn't even know. I have learned about the Holocaust my whole life, seen movies and read many books. I have even heard survivor's ...
Oswiecim, Poland the_stamms... we headed for the Jewish quarter where we'd seen some nice looking restaurants and bars yesterday and found somewhere to eat. We then headed to some bars we'd seen advertised in a guide book - one of them was allegedly a gay bar but seemed fairly 'main stream', below it was a club that had lots of memorabilia from days passed.
Oswiecim, Poland lyse_e... the camp was liberated, 1.1 million people were murdered here and about 960,000 of them were Jews. Poland had Europe's largest Jewish population, 3,500,000. During the Holocaust, 4,500,000 Jews were killed in Poland, bringing many in from other countries. By the end of the war less than one in 10 of the original population of Polish Jews survived. Sorry for the depressing statistics, but as it is said, if we forget our own history, we are sentenced to live it again.
Auschwitz, Poland tucker... the whole time. The next day, we went to Vera's half-sister's house and ate: a preserved apricot, noodle-and-dumpling soup, mushy potato circles, cabbage, red onions, a chunk of ham, and an animal's leg the shape of a chicken's but the size of a pig's. Maybe that's why we didn't ride the Christmas Pig. (In all honesty, there is the tradition in the Czech Republic that if you don't eat all Christmas before Christmas dinner, then you'll see a golden pig.) Oh! And ...
Krnov, Czech Republic modernoddyseus... separated by a gorge wide enough only for the road? Did giant starfish arms and plesiosaurus necks overflow from a salty inland sea? Were the hills giant marshmallows upon which the cars could get where they were going only by bouncing from one marshmallow to the next? No; the scenery was blue sky above black trees without leaves above white snow above large flat fields. I was alone on the road, and cars came seldomly. And guess what happened then. Did Marta Manczak ...
Pietrowice, Poland modernoddyseus... perfectly. The countryside around me was agricultural and the road was in poor condition, narrow and lots of potholes. I arrived in Kutna Hora and checked into the campsite about 6pm, only 77km today. I splashed out on dinner in a nice restaurant and got dumplings as the side order. They came on a small plate and looked like slices of a pale bread roll. They were very nice, perfect with the fried chicken and veg. Back in the campsite the Czech Rep v USA ice hockey match ...
