Marseille

Really beautiful train ride along the coast (which in a way it is a shame that the railway is right on the beach) Marseille is a bigger city and not so quaint but the port area is nice. Flew out of Marseille to Lisbon. I know not quite geographically logicall

Life lessons

... ride the train from Limoux to Marseille, which involves a couple transfers, then from Marseille there is an overnight bus that will take me right into Torino, where I'll meet my friend Carlo, and spend a couple days.

My simple train ride into Marseille turns into a series of missed connections and mis-communications. It somehow ends up taking five hours longer than I expected, and for the last stretch I just got on a train that I hadn't paid a ticket for. Note to ...

... a village called Le Tholonet, not far outside of Aix, one of the villages around the Sainte-Victoire mountain. The landscape was incredible, completely different to what we have on Exmoor of course, and views
were stunning. We walked up to the Barrage (dam) Zola, built by Emile Zola’s (a French writer living in the latter half of the 19th Century) father. The water was a turquoise colour, and it was there that I chose my spot to yodel and sing The Sound of ...

France sucks at Halloween

... and instead went out to a great classic Provencal dinner, and got some good wine. But then, we started to see a couple kids in costumes, or rather just kids in sheets. I think one of them had a mask. But on our way back from dinner, we found the bar scene. Mostly it was just people out on a normal Saturday night, but we had to at least go check it out. We were somewhat impressed with the Halloween scene, and probably could ...

Amorous or Foolhardy?

... planning at all!

But tonight we’re talking a relaxing voyage by boat over the Medeterranian. Which will be followed by another. A few relaxing sailing days it would seems. Not exactly what I thought we were going to be doing, but it will work. We have our own berth with a shower and bed. Oh the luxuries never end! At least these 2 fools will rest well tonight and prepare for what lies ahead.

... parents for a trip to Cassis, Toulon, and for a drive around the Sainte-Victoire mountain. Yes, I was an 'honoury' northerner for the day (Lizzie, je blague, je blague!). Cassis is absolutely beautiful, picture perfect, with a little marina and a beach, with amazing turquoise-coloured water. We had a huge breakfast there which meant I didn't need to eat again until 7, and then headed along the coast to Toulon, where we walked through a market to one of the marinas, which ...

Aix marks the spot

Bonjour avec Aix-en-Provence Cherie
Since the last news we have visited the Cote D'Azur spending time at Monte Carlo and Antibes. We stayed near Antibes at a place called Biot and at night you could hear the seals at nearby Marineland - very strange. It was still quite hot and stickey with more mozzies. Monte Carlo was wall to wall money with billions of dollars in boats and cars. Antibes was similar but it had a lovely old town as well.
We arrived ...

Life is good.

... south (Paris, of course, has museums that are better, except for the cobwebs that inevitably find themselves on the sculptures and picture frames and have a *************vincing the staff to remove them.) This is ironic to me--France has such a rich history but the French don't really seem to care about preserving it well. And then there's the architecture; lots of buildings in France are just built for the sake of showcasing, well, the architecture. I don't really know. I ...

Out stepped a boy and a girl, hand in hand. As they strolled by, they glanced up at us curiously, and then continued on their way. The little girl turned around and flashed us a quick smile. Mei immediately fell in love and followed them up the street to get a ...
