From Downtown Lima uphill to Cusco

A quick update on our last day in Lima, and first day in Cusco. We tried the local way of traveling by using the colectivos = a mini-bus that drives with a dangerous speed, and you might not be properly in before the driver goes again! Mad... But thus we used this way of transport to get to Central Lima (aka downtown or old town). The difference between where we stayed and how it looks in central Lima was shocking. There are some very colourful shanty towns hanging on Cerro San Cristobal (mou...

Experiencing the Sacred Valleys of the Incas

It seems as if this whole day was sacred, from the amazing fresh morning breeze at breakfast, getting Word and visiting the Sacred Valleys of the Incas. Mark 11:22 says Žembrace this God-life. Really embrace it and nothing will be too much for youŽ. Such an inspiring way to start a day!! This was a fun-filled day! We took a local taxi to Pisac. Never would I have guessed the pleasant drive this would be!! Mario, our driver, was the most amazing person. So passionate about Peru, and with our b...

This is it - Machu Picchu

Spending four days in Cusco to see and learn more about the Inca heritage and history, ending off by visiting the most amazing Inca city on the mountain called Machu Picchu. Ah, wow!!! What a place! It took us 4 hours on the backpackers train (thus the slow, cheaper train) to get the town close to the ruins. Then a bus ride up into the mountains to the entrance. Going up and up and up. The nature looks so different here. The Mountains are green, not as brown as in Lima or Cusco. The Amazon Ju...

Spending time in Cusco

We stayed about 4 days in Cusco, which gave us a lot of time to get to know this city. Cusco is beautiful! The Plaza de Armas/main square is a peaceful place, full of families and children and young people in love. Sort of a Paris in Peru. On MOnday we did a lot of touristy things. We visited the Qorikancha/Place of gold. It is now known as the Santo Domonigo. This is a place where the Incas had their temples for the Sun, Moon, Stars, Rainbow and Lghtning. The Spaniards documented that they h...

Cusco and the Inca Trail

We had 3 stops in Cusco with the Inca Trail and jungle trip in between. It seems just about everyone who visits South America comes here with it being so close to Machu Picchu, but despite the crowds and hassle it's still very nice. Cafes with balconies above the squares provided lots of good people-watching time when recovering from the walk and jungle. Lots of nice food and many excellent pisco sours helped as well.
The Inca Trail itself was superb ...

Going the Salkantay way

... but in sweet form. The up parts were still tiring, but I kept on hiking without slowing down. We hiked for 4 hours uphill to get to the highest point of the trail (4650m) located halfway between 2 huge mountains – Salkantay and Tucarhuay. From the pass, the views of the 2 snow-capped mountains were incredible.

I arrived at the highest point of the trek after Brenda and Marcel.
