... realised that the snow must indeed be exceptional and that the trains must be disrupted. They were. No trains were going anywhere. We waited for a while to see if the trains would start moving but by 10:00 we were told the situation would be reviewed at 12:00 noon so we all headed across the road from the station to a Starbucks as the cafe at the station was full of other waiting passengers. We stayed in Starbucks until almost 2:30 only buying a couple of hot drinks. Some of the ...

... the next train, which was to Nagano, we missed it and had to wait for the next one. That was 20 minutes late leaving so what had been at the outset a very tight schedule for the day so that we could see the snow monkeys became almost impossible. ... for quite some time, and I was beginning to suspect that she wasn't coming back, but she eventually returned carrying a bunch of ice-cream tubs for us. I was tempted to ask for an extra one to make her walk back and get it, but we were only 30 minutes from Nagano at the time, so she might not have made it back in time.

Before long, on what I think was the most relaxed Shinkansen journey I've ever been on, we finished the 105 minute journey from Tokyo, and ...
