Day 1, north west Germany. I drove off the ferry at Rotterdam with no problems, only to be confronted by brilliant blue skies, and warm sunshine. So obviously I have found the elusive summer which has not visited Britain yet - it is alive and well in continental Europe. Driving east from Europoort towards Rotterdam is a bit grim, with lots of oil containers and cranes everywhere. So I allowed Mr Satnav to take over, tapped in my destination of Berlin, and it immediately told me to turn off ...
Fürstenau, Germany shanemhewitt... t get the results back until July, but we are hoping they did well. The Class of ’08 had their graduation ceremony yesterday which was the first ever graduation of the school. We used a lot of the USA traditions, with the cap and gowns and other things, which they do not do here in Germany. The sharing and mixing of cultures keeps us on our toes all the time! In the evening we had a party (and of course were able to have some beer with ...
Weimar, Thuringia, Germany robconr... we only had 30 minutes to change planes! It was really close that we would miss the plane (even though it was not our fault). We ran out of the 1st plane and trying to catch plane #2....as we were heading from terminal A to terminal C we heard "last boarding call for US Airways to Frankfurt, Germany"...so we asked one of the airport guys to give us a ride with the golf cart...when we got to the terminal the doors to board the plane were already shut ...
Erfurt, Thuringia, Germany rommy... I didn’t fly off the bike and most of the collision was absorbed by the bike tires. The guy looked at me like it was my fault, but his wife sitting in the front seat was already starting to chew him out, so I figured that would be punishment enough. Anyways, there may be more bikers over here, but there’s always more morons driving cars. (That’s another of the stereotypes that I have seen through in my time ...
Weimar, Thuringia, Germany robconr... the official announcement in the next email. Let the rumors begin!!
Saturday we go to visit the Anna Amalia Library. This is the place that burned in 2004 and houses some really important old books. It reopened in Dec. but I hadn’t made it in yet. It is expensive, in part because they are trying to raise money for the restoration efforts. However, I can say that it was absolutely worth it. It’s definitely the most beautiful library I’ ...
... students do poorly on stuff that they had demonstrated their knowledge of in class, and should be quite trivial by the 8th grade. Unfortunately some extremely simple things seem to have slipped through the cracks and they certainly spent little or no time studying. It showed.
The rest of the school week was pretty uneventful, although I did suffer a migraine on Tues which was a real bummer. It had been since New York last summer so I ...
... dry crispy things you find in the store in a package! I explained that the equivalent of 'chips a’hoy’ is really a poor excuse for a cookie, and that these would be soft and gooey. Haha.
So I spent like half an hour chopping up a block of cooking chocolate into "chocolate chips" and then mixing them into the batter. When I went to bake them in the oven the first batch allowed me to experimentally determine that my Fahrenheit to Celcius ...
... the town. We also found a street that some of our relatives lived on. Then back to Lembach. We got back to the house about the time Daniel and Denise got home. We had supper of spaghetti and meat sauce (as good as my mother used to make), fresh parmesan, salad, cheese, and yogurt cups (Dannon). We then talked-and argued politics and morals and education-until nearly 11.
