... 251 3 hrs, 8 kms The back side of San Marino is quite different from different from the front side. The front side is quite urbanized with town after town leading to the seemingly unconquerable cliff. The backside is more laid back rolling hills--even the slope leading to mountaintop capital doesn't look so difficult to climb, sort of detracting from the theory that San Marino maintained its independence because it was impossible to conquer. ...

... to explore-- but it’s still fun, with a stairway where you can climb up to the tower for the view. Not far away, I can hear the cheers from a football stadium-- I assume the only one in San Marino… I’ve noticed signs showing many Sanmarinenses support nearby Italian teams-- but I imagine they love their national team a lot more… It’s clear folks here are very proud of their little country… 0526 San Marino’s World ...

Montegiardino, July 30, 2013, Day 252
3 hrs, 6 kms

Finally I get a taste of the San Marino of centuries past, with its tight knit communities and house ...

... take a shower… do some grocery shopping and take my very first swim in the Adriatic Sea… Then I take a long walk along the crowded boardwalk, just enjoying my new “home”… God bless this tourist trap town… After hiking way down the coast, I decide to cross under the railway and head back into town through a run of the mill residential neighbourhood. But just as I’m nearing my hostel, I figure I’ll go ahead and take a ...

... tiny country of San Marino. At a mere 62 square kilometers, the hike is going to have to spill into Italy to reach the 100 kilometer minimum... which won't be a problem. Rimini is a cool city too and I'm glad to include it in my Superhike. Today I only have a few hours left of daylight, so there's not point in heading up to San Marino today. Instead I'm going to hop on a train up the coast and wander through a couple of beach towns. Beach towns on ...
