Surfing and Mezcal

... life.
My surf lessons have been so-so. I am able to stand up and ride waves that are on the small side but we will see if I can remember how to do this when I have other chances to surf in Nica and Panama. What I have mastered is carrying the surf board around in a surffer-like fasion and not bumping it into things when I turn corners...THAT I have down. The good thing is that the more expeienced surfers are pretty chill and don ´t mind giving a few pointers or letting ...

Puerto Escondido & Zipolite - The 5 S´s

... who we would end up running into again later in the week. April 14th After a huge sleep in, I went down the beach with two guys from the hostel to kick the footy on the beach while Brendan slept in. We spent the rest of the day hanging around the hostel talking ****, down the beach drinking in the sand or swimming and just relaxing. It was good to get out of the colonial cities for a few days, i think we were both sick of churches and zocalos for awhile atleast. It was also fun to ...

Puerto Escondido and a big mahi mahi

... relaxed. Then wibz prepared dinner (the fish we caught) for everyone in the hostel. Omg was it a good feed!! And so much better knowing we caught it!! That night we drank with our new friends the finish couple (hilarious), our Mexican friends, a few Americans and a Spanish gyspy magician! It was an awesome night!! We had very little sleep and had to leave pretty early. Not a pleasant journey to Cancun. But so worth it!!

the trip

... decided to pull my bag off the flight to Gatwick and buy a horribly expensive one-way ticket to Manchester instead... I figured by the time I get to Gatwick and then spend either 4 hours on trains or even 2 night in hotels around London i'd be no worse off then spending the £135 just to get up to Manchester and then Liverpool as planned. Silly Me. So after a few more issues with confusing trains for buses and then eventually getting a bus I made it to ...

... trail that are permanent expats. Some are very cool, this guy was not, but the danger, similar to traveling alone, is that you make up and believe your own BS about what you're doing, which is usually not much, and it is too often based on a victim mentality. But of course there are are all types. I really liked the local people here, and would love to come back to visit Puerto Escondido, the upscale resorts at Huatulco, and there little beaches in between.

A run in with the Law...literally.

... to a standstill - there was a huge line of parked cars on the road with everyone was out of their cars sitting on the side of the road...in Mexico, this is a very bad sign and could mean hours of delay...so without hesitation, I cross the double yellow line and ride on the wrong side of the road towards the front of the line to see what's happening. Of course, as we slowly make our way to the front, we are the center of attention...some people just checking out the ...

Puerto Escondido - arrived!

... you can imagine there were fears of another scam immediately going through our heads, but it was all OK, a little bumpy, but OK! There was a young guy on the bus with us to and he showed us where to get off and pointed us in the direction of our cabañas, which was really nice of him. We are staying in Cabañas Edda, it is about 3 minutes up from the beach and we have our own bathroom. The rooms are basic, but ...

Mercado, un Rodeo, una Roca Blanca, y un Incendio

Yesterday, we got up early in the morning to go to the market because Becky was leaving that afternoon and wanted to do some last-minute shopping. Rebecca and I went with Lori and Becky's host mom and sister. It was a lot of fun checking out the local market for all of the great food and handicrafts etc. One cool thing is that we went to two small stores next to the market to buy café and chocolate. I got some homemade ...

HEADING SOUTH

... also a roadside place, under a "palapas" of straw, our scrambled eggs and hot water for tea was cooked on a wood fire. It was the best breakfast we'd had. Friday the 1st was a magnificent drive down the coast, more stretches of pristine beaches and pounding surf. The curves were not as bad, not as much steep climbing and descending, but the number of speed bumps increased geometrically as the roads straightened out. We started shouting "topes" (toe-pays - the Mexican ...

Puerto Escondido

... I've never seen anyone take longer and do a worse job of getting their 5th wheel rig into the park. Then, they must have thought the whole park was just for them, because they parked more or less in the middle of at least 2-3 spaces, plus were blocking the way to get to a few other spaces. I can only hope that Roberto, the owner/manager, charged them a lot extra. They really made themselves comfortable, with no regard ...
