Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel Vista Del Mar Avalon
Don't stay in the small room!
We stayed at Hotel Vista Del Mar based on the reviews. We didn't have the cash for an ocean view suite, or deluxe room so we booked a courtyard room at 115 a night. Big Dissapointment!!! The room was beyond small and situated right near the island recycling center. When the bars closed every night you could hear the clanging of bottles, etc. This lasted all night. We also had scheduled an in-room massage with Massages by Michelle (GREAT!) however our room was too small to open up the massage table so we had to adjust our plans. It was somewhat dissapointing but the massage still turned out great. We did it in her studio instead. Overall, I would only stay at this hotel if we had an ocean view room or deluxe suite. We could have found a much better deal on the island for what we ended up getting. The warm cookies every night were a nice touch and the location was great. So, if you have the money to dish out for the big rooms then I think it would be a nice spot. However highly overpriced! Our room might have been worth 60-70 bucks.
Awesome! Simply Perfect!
We recently stayed here for 2 nights off season (Sun & Mon right after thanksgiving weekend) and were pleasantly surprised by how nice it really is! We stayed in the oceanfront room! Definitely worth the extra cost! We were with our 9 year old son who enjoyed taking a bubblebath and watching tv at the same time! The jacuzzi tub is big enough for two! We happened to be in Catalina during California's first cold front in years, but did mind at all being in the room with the fireplace on, we rented a movie for the VCR and left the curtains open for a wonderful oceanview with the palm trees blowing in the wind. The next day we rented a golf cart and had an amazing tour of the island..this hotel made our short trip perfect! The cookies were delicious! The breakfast was not quite as good as it should have been, but with the cold windy weather we had I did not think it be so important...P.S. Monday was very quiet, but Tuesday a cruise ship came in the morning we were leaving so the town was alittle more crowded...
My boyfriend and I recently stayed at this hotel and loved it. We took the smallest room to save money, but it was still very clean and comfortable. The hotel staff was very friendly. The location was great because it was right in front of the beach. The breakfast was good and so were the milk and cookies they make every evening. I highly recommend this hotel.
We'll Be Returning
We rented a suite for one night, and my only complaint was that we should have stayed longer. The accomodations were spacious, the bed was easy to sleep in, the bathroom (like the atrium) had a skylight, the fireplace in front of the bed added to the romance, the staff were friendly and helpful, the location was central to everything Avalon, the cookies and milk in the evening were a real treat, and the view from the balcony was lovely (especially at sunset). While we didn't use the refrigerator, other than to drink the two complimentary bottles of water, it was clean and ample. The television was next to the fireplace, so watching from bed was easy. There was a VCR in the room, which we did not use. The hotel is non-smoking, which was totally consistent with the 5-star cleanliness. Regarding charges, the price was reasonable given the season, and no need to worry about incidentals - none were used and none were charged. While we've had a better continental breakfast, all the usual items were fresh and in abundance - some pastries (e.g., croissant or muffin), coffee/tea, orange juice, cereal, bananas, oatmeal, etc... (By the way, we only used one of the coupons for 10% off at local stores, and the store honored it with a smile and the assurance that it could be re-used during our stay at the hotel).
Comfy, Cozy and Charming
This is a great hotel! My husband and I stayed in one of the Courtyard Rooms and it was very cozy and comfortable. The room had a great little fireplace which gave the room a romantic flair. The hotel is conveniently located on the main strip of Avalon, so everything is easily accesible. I would definitely stay at this hotel again!
Repeat guests ten summers running!
My girl and I have stayed at the Vista Del Mar every summer for the past ten years and always pre-book for the following year upon check-out. The third-floor view is great, especially from one of two ocean-view suites with private balconies, and the location is right in the middle of the beachfront. Here's the story: there is only about fourteen rooms, and the rooms get smaller, and less expensive, the further back in the hotel you go. Our first year, when we had (much) less discretionary income, we stayed in the very smallest room at the very back, but were treated just as well by the staff. In the intervening years, we've slowly moved to larger rooms, and have spent that last four years in an ocean view suite. The staff has always been gracious and helpful, and the hotel itself is very comfortable -- not overdone, but rather casually elegant. Because of the price range of the hotel, some of the guests can be a little stuffy, and it's not really a place for kids. We like to have a great time on Catalina -- hike, bike, party, have fun -- but it's so nice to come back to a quiet, beautiful oasis and know it's going to be relaxing. The courtyard is very welcoming, and the continental breakfast is decent enough (though it was much better before they used frozen bagels). Overall, very recommended.
The Hotel Vista Del Mar was very nice!
This is our first stay at Catilna Island. I am writing this review from the room we are in. Wireless internet is available (for a small fee) all over Avalon, including inside of the rooms at Hotel Vista Del Mar.
This room is really nice. We are staying in the Courtyard Deluxe room.
It has a fireplace (with an on/off switch on the wall next to the bed), many TV channels, and a small tub with jacuzzi jets. It also has a refridgerator and a wet bar. The decor is very nice and the staff has been very friendly. It offers a nice contential breakfast with a large varity of items. In the evenings, they offer warm cookies and milk. We have walked by many other hotels here and at first I thought maybe we were paying to much for our room as it is one of the priceist ones on the island. But in speaking with others in our passings here, I have learned we have it very nice compared to other stories I have heard.
Love This Hotel!!
My husband and I stay at this hotel every year for our anniversary (we were married in Avalon). We love the ocean view suites! The hotel is very quiet, close to everything, and the hotel staff is very welcoming.
We had only one complaint from all of our stays and that was the aquarium that WAS built into the wall outside one of the suites. It has since been replaced, and now the place is absolutely perfect! We have recieved special promotions from the hotel also!
Pretentious and Overpriced
If you are looking for a pretentious and overpriced hotel, this is for you. It reminded me of a French hotel - very small rooms and unfriendly staff. The hotel is well located and is generally quiet (as long as you do not turn on the air conditioner). The continental breakfast is not worth waking up for. Very restrictive policies on cancellations or use of gift certificates. There are better deals on Avalon!
A great hotel
Stayed there twice in the oceanview rooms. There are only 2 oceanview rooms. A little pricey, but what a fun place to just hang out on the balcony and watch the people below. Fireplace and Whilpool tub for two with view of the ocean. I was engaged there and they did everything that I asked for, including being left alone. No restaurant, but close to all. Would highly recommend.

... in the last century. We saw 2 bison close enough to photograph and a herd on a plain out in the distance. Bison were introduced to the island by the movie industry to film westerns on the island. After eating, sleeping and reproducing a short while, there were way too many of them. So they exported many to the midwest and put the 150 or so remaining on the island on birth control. That seems to work well. In the last year, only one was born. Charles also spoke ...

A man came up to ask me for change earlier. I thought change for the parking meter; he told me it was to eat. I was surprised to see such a well-presented person – clean clothes and freshly shaven – asking for money. I would have had him down as a tourist like me. As is usually the case at home ...

So I thought it might turn up beneficial to someone if I made a list of the items I have gathered for my backpacking trip. I have done a lot of research on these items and have come up with the best items to suit my needs on this trip. Everyone's list will be different in ways, but I'm sure there will be some great ideas in here that might save you some time. Thanks for looking.

Hello all. I'm sure most everyone here knows me, but for those of you that don't welcome. I hope this is informative and maybe a slight bit entertaining as it develops. My name is Daniel, and I am planning a 7 month backpacking, cruising adventure through Europe starting in Huntington Beach, CA.
The adventure hasn't even officially started, but I feel it running through me as I always have. I have realized through the past year or so that I've lost something. A piece ...
