A Day (or two) in the Life of Benita

... it together! That's how we drove down the mountain...
It is fine though as I haven't actually been car sick, just incredibly shocked at the speed some of these drives take corners that look like they actually just fall off the side of a cliff. Regardless we arrived safely, and I Heard it, I could hear the ocean as we strolled towards a fenced off area high above the sea. Where we inadvertently interrupted some moments of passion for a young couple canoodling on ...

Back to the Roots

... Then at night how I feel that if I looked closely enough I'd be able to catch my breath in my hands. I want to show you how the clouds float through the trees, and how the mountains around look as if they are breathing.... For this is the only time I wish I was an artist.

I have recently come to the realization why this specific process is slightly difficult for me. Don't get me wrong, I love being with ...

San Giorgio Morgeto

OK so San Giorgio Morgeto may seem like an obscure place to visit. After all it is in the middle of Calabria and not the easiest place to find. However, it is also the place where the Ferraro family has its roots (along with most of the rest of the Italian community in Guelph). Right away we must thank the Raso family for all of their help and kindness in getting us there. We called a family friend who was born there to ask about a good hotel ...

The Deep South (of Italy)

... ie the Scylla opposite Charibydes (Cariddi in Italian) in Homer's Odyssey - I had driven past it many times and this time I was determined to stop there, and we had lunch on a terrace on the cliff overlooking Sicily. Finally the grand crossing to Sicily, one of many for me (around 8-10), but the first for Giuliana - I still get excited every time though and have a sensation of going somewhere strange and different, where the past is still very much part of the present.

Tropea - I had no idea!

Tropea is a seaside town that is not really on the international tourist circuit. However it is a tourist hot spot for Italians. Gianluca recommended that we go there so Dad and I stopped there on the way down to Sicily. It was absolutely incredible! The water was crystal clear blue, the beaches covered in soft white sand and there was a rock shelf that you could jump off into the water ...

The Italian language

In Italy, Latin remained the official written language for many centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire and was used for diplomacy, by the Church and in literature. But apart from this learned form of Latin there was also a spoken form that changed constantly with everyday use and gave rise to many different local variations that ...

The Hunt for the La Praia Hotel

... to drive the length of the boot, hop on the ferry and then drive to the B & B in Sicily. A good plan and before leaving the B & B in Sorrento, she had located a hotel in Tropea for us to spend the night. We made good time on the A3 and at Lagonegro, we exited the A3 and jumped on the SS18 towards Pizzo. The SS18 was a recommendation from our B & B host as it is a coastal road and has good views of the ...

With the family in CALABRIA! Sant'Onofrio & more
