Travel day from Kolocep, Croatia to Bari, Italy

Hi all: Today was our last day in on our island of Kolocep and we enjoyed a leisurely day as we prepared for our rather long journey to Greece. The hotel staff at Villa Kolocep is exceptional! They were quite accommodating and allowed us to stay in our room the entire day, up until the time we left the island at 6:45pm, at no extra charge! With that we took advantage of our last few hours of Croatia sun and took our books to the pool and soaked up the rays. We stayed at the pool until 5pm and...

First port of call: Dubrovnik

... our own room and bathroom and be able to sleep in peace!
We arrived in Dubrovnik, Croatia early the next morning. We decided not to join all of those rushing to get off the ship and instead played some minigolf and had some lunch before disembarking. We took a shuttle into the city and walked all around the old city, which is surrounded by thick walls. All of the buildings are the same colour and look very similar. We headed down ...

... is quite the tourist hot spot these days. Dinner was a comforting, and more importantly cheap, pizza. That night we picked up a couple man sodas and sat down on our ´´beach´´ watching the people walk by.

The next day we took a ferry to a nearby island for some fun in the sun. They claim that the island has numerous beaches (some even nudies!!!), but when we arrived we found that their definition of beach wasn´t exactly the same as ours ...

The Adriatic Way of Life

Weather has cleared for a sunny day. By mid-morning Dubrovnik is full of tourists polishing up the flagstones of the Stradun from two cruise ships in port. We escape by bus to a tourist beach at Lapad where the cafe strip is quiet and calming. The ...

Croatia to Italy a Cautionary Tale....

... I refused to go back, calmed myself down, and kept swimming at an angle against the current towards the Island. Another 15 minutes went by and much the same, except I was getting pretty cold myself and I was now in a position that reaching the island was closer (and safer) than going back. I would tell you that I was getting tired as well, but this of course is not true, because I am about the same in my swimming capabilities ...

Knowing what I know now...

... to family and friends via a microphone over the internet for pennies a minute has definitely been the way to go. (Jim) Let me offer a simpler version of Amy's last paragraph: T-Mobile sucks. I should have realized as much when I saw Jan Ullrich riding in the Tour de France, wearing a pink T-Mobile shirt and big white sunglasses. Nothing good can come from a company that sponsors an athlete who dresses like that.

Day stop in Dubrovnik!

It was an early start again on the bus!! We of course were running late and just made the bus! Met a lovely couple from Canada who kept us entertained the whole way!! We arrived in the sweltering heat and made our way up to the little guest house!! Very cute but didnt waste time here as we only had that afternoon and the next morning to explore Dubrovnik!! We headed ...

The Pearl of the Adriatic

... and lack of a local host it seemed as good an idea as any. We ended up spending the evening there, talking to an interesting group of local guys. One of them provided a very detailed explanation of the Kosovo situation for us, but it was two young former soldiers who I'll never forget. While one of them struggled to keep his eyes open, the other told us of the days when the former Yugoslav army were shelling the city, back in the early 1990s. He drank his ...

... guy ever and we were the luckiest stupidest tourists ever. We presented him with our Australian Flag apron which went down a treat as we'd learnt the previous night that he is the head chef at the fire station. He loved it, everyone got a good laugh out of it. We headed back into the bigger town to get the spare fixed (oops again) and searched high and low for a car jack to no avail. We dropped a case of beer back to the fire station for the boys and headed off on a very ...

The Bridge of Mostar

... old stone bridge has been re-built using traditional techniques and the same type of stone so that it's almost an exact replica. Mostar still has a fair way to go and of course it will never be the same again, but the people are friendly and helpful and are doing the same as our hostess - rebuilding. We said goodbye to our landlady and headed towards to bus station. We had decided Sarajevo would be our next stop. Another Olympic city.
