It was great to wake to blue skies this morning. The road from Matera south was tremendous for 46 kilometers to Metaponto at the sea. Then the problem. We had thought we would continue south along the coast through Calabria to the toe of the boot, but the coast road turned out to be a restricted access highway with no bikes allowed. We did the obvious thing, we went into the only store and had the helpful shopkeeper make us delicious ...

... cousin Enzo and his wife for lunch and a local canteen that dishes out home cooked local fare ...risotto, pasta, calamari, melanzane parmigiana, veg in olive oil, spinach and more for the local workers...all at very reasonable prices....our spare tyres are growing by the minute!!! Too full to move we retire to rest ha ha, so that we can walk the town again, fun fun!! ..eat again ...phew we all agree it's getting ...

... one of my favourite cities in the world. With the best view of that city imaginable. The day just got better as we sat down to dinner (expecting a buffet style dinner as it was included in the price) but we got a full silver service dinner with our table right next to the window for the sunset. Our first night in Bari was mixed with typical city sights and sounds .....hooting cars that just edge their way into crowded streets where drivers double park,....as the parking is so jam packed... and run in to shop,..and then casually come back..bustling locals...particularly young dressed to the nines.... Lots of sidewalk restaurants, pubs and eateries all ready to get you in and take your money. ...

... Adriatic, so we joined the local sunbathers down by the shore. The small beach was crowded so I went straight for the water and waded into the ocean. The water was warmer than in California, but still about a cool 70°F. We walked to the edge of the narrow beach and into a tunnel that brought us to an opening against the waves. Young kids took turns jumping off the rocks or diving into the deep water in front of the tunnel. I don't think too many places in the US are ...
