Gardone Riveria and Salo

A travel blog entry by rcampbellburns on Jul 26, 2014

Today was a pack up and quiet day. There was a monster thunder storm overnight and the rain was steady until mid-late morning. We decided to try and see what Raffa was like, it looked interesting from the road that we have frequently used on our way south around the lake. When we got there, we drove straight through, there was a lovely church but apart from that - nothing else....not even a gelataria!! So we headed to Salo instead and parked at ...

... cultural education and the first time at the opera for the boys. Carmen was to have four acts and by 10.15pm we arrived at the end of the first act. We decided to leave and head home. The boys were tired and we had achieved our goal of letting them experience the opera in the Verona Arena. It was a special night and the drive home was uneventful and relatively straightforward. We put two tired little boys to bed and hit the sack ourselves, another great ...

After a healthy breakfast we decided to head up the west coast of the lake towards Riva. We were only going to go as far as Gargnano but when we arrived we couldn't find parking so we continued on the road and ended up in Limone. The road cut through the mountains and there were plenty of long tunnels on the road to Limone - the scenery was amazing but the weather was hampering us a bit. It was lightly raining and it made the view across the lake a bit blurred. We parked by the ...

Boat trip to Bardolino...

Over breakfast we decided where to go today by ferry - we settled on Bardolino, on the eastern side of the lake, approximately opposite Gardone Riveria. We had to get a shimmy on as the ferry departed at 10.23am and we had started the day leisurely! We made the ferry with five minutes to spare and the journey across the lake took about 1 hour 15 minutes with a stop at Garda on the way. The scenery from the water was spectacular and we sat outside at the front of the ferry for the journey. ...

Lago Di Garda - E il vincitore è ...

... We were really impressed with its waterfront castle and architecture, but it was hard to move in the tiny streets and the squares were packed with punters drinking and eating. Also it doesn't really have many waterfront spots. Close, but no spritz from these judges. In 2nd position is the often overlooked Lazise. It has a castle, city walls, narrow picturesque streets and plenty of cafe and restaurant spots overlooking the water. ...
