    ... 8217;t have been easier. I apparently passed through the downtown area in tunnels the express lanes go through on the main road through the city, so I missed it. I seemed to have missed the very slummy areas on the way into town as well. Overall most of the city on the way in was an unappealing mixed density of cheap looking modern buildings and no particular planning. Santo Domingo does have a subway system, or so my guidebooks say.     Having thought this last weekend would have been relaxing, I could not have been further from the truth. Having been invited by Freddy to come to a play on Friday, I expected to come along, have a few drinks then head on home at midnight.
