Whew! It seems like forever ago that I last updated this site... Since I last wrote I rushed back from Leon to get to Murra for an outting we had planned with an adolescent group in San Gregorio. We had planned this outting for over a month; to go to the canyon out near Somoto (about a 6 hour bus ride) for the day. I had asked a friend to drive us all out there in their truck and they agreed for a fee of $2000 cords or about $120 (gas is expensive). The only problem was I ended up staying in ...
Managua, Nicaragua carrienica05... br>Teddy and I actually high-fived when we were done. That's how psyched
we were about our Spanish. We are dorks. Tomorrow, Gabriel is going to
be our guide and take us on a tour of a local organic coffee farm. Then
on Friday, we are going to climb the Volcan Maderas. It is the smaller
of the two volcanoes, but we've heard it's a much better hike. We think
we even get to swim in a crater lake at the top! And see monkeys!
Everyone here ...
Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua namaste32Well, we've been in San Juan del Sur for longer than we had anticipated. One of our main reasons for coming down here was to check out a beach nearby where sea turtles come to lay their eggs, and where those eggs subsequently hatch into wee tiny little turtles that crawl out into the sea. Such things would be absolutely amazing to see. Unfortunately, for the first many nights we were here, the place that organizes such tours was not able ...
San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua kimandjohn... my haste in following him out to Maderas and that my exacting standards are going to hate the place. My initial excitement is starting to wane. I’m happy to see James and want to catch up over a bottle of rum about our various adventures since we last hung out in San Pedro and Antigua, but seriously could I put up with sawdust, brick dust, hammering, drilling, sanding? Well blow me down with a feather, it seemed I could.

It is a great testament to Abe who ...
San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua hess... owner. We told the kayak guy that we had been told it was $20 for the kayak but he firmly stated that he was charging us $20 each. If we had known this before we could have made provisions, but with only one bank on the island and that being in Moyogalpa we had limited funds with us, besides that bank machine was pretty temperamental from Alan´s experience and we didnt want to draw from there again. We could have paid the money for the kayak but then we risked not having enough to ...
Moyogalpa, Rivas, Nicaragua mardow... when it comes to parades, the only thing Latin about it being the sway of salsa hips and the odd Reggeaton beat from the marching bands. I enjoyed it nonetheless.

The next morning we decided to head to Isla Ometepe to do some volcano exploring. Lyndsey, a native Seattalite, was coming with us. She was travelling through Central America on a break from her studies.

If only we had known what to expect from Isla Ometepe, would we have still gone?
San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua mardow... the best you can to negotiate in a foreign country and just feeling bitter and wary and distrustful of everyone. Five weeks into this trip I'm really struggling not to cross that line. It's getting harder everyday and I've got to figure out how to avoid that. I'm reminded again just how draining travel can be. Sure it's fun to meet people, experience new foods and sights and places, but it's also utterly exhausting; not knowing where to go, how to ...
San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua mschwartz... all the locals go, Playa Maderas. Here the locals are AMAZING and didn't want anyone catching the waves of THEIR beach. I ventured out for a mere two waves, and handed the board back over to Jason. The waves also were quite big, about 5 ft (which is big for me, maybe not some people). Jason did really well though, but had to be careful not to get in the way of the locals. Sorry to talk about only ...
San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua lee-anna... and super tiring i was able to catch alot of waves and stand up and all that its just my arms were so tired i could only do it for like 10min at a time we didnt do much last night its hard to go out and stay up when im so freaking tired at the end of the day today we are doing the same thing but different beach (maderas) but catching a different shuttle that brings us back earlier - i think i can post some pics maybe tonight ryan
san juan del sur, Nicaragua montgomeryr3... worked out really well for us. We caught a ride with a pickup truck with a news crew in it that was going to the waterfalls as well so they took us straight there as well as 3 km's up the volcano. We hiked the last Km up on a really nice trail through the forest where we saw some monkeys and a lizard. It was still ridiculously hot that it turned what would have been a moderately easy hike into a dizzying climb ...
