... He was able to tell us a few things as we went around and the boat man also pointed out the house of Marco Polo and Casablanca. Very cool! It was amazing cruising around the canals with so much traffic and no one crashing! The buildings are all built on stilts and doorsteps are right to the water so the only way into some places are to get a boat. After the gondola ride were free to do what we wanted. ... was about a block from Rialto Bridge. It took about 10 minutes to walk there with a detailed street map. After dinner we walked over to Marco plaza for some gelato. So many pigeons there. ... you can almost visualize what it would have been like to live here hundreds of years back. Everything you see now has virtually been unchanged for centuries. Merchants still haul goods down the canals on their boats and people set up fruit and vegetable stands in many parts of the area.
