Painted Monastaries, Farms & Fall Foliage Backdrop

... frescos. Each is surrounded by a fortification and flowers growing around its courtyard. In our last monastery, the nuns are beginning mass. They are chanting. It is only us as observers in the tiny interior. Pretty amazing.

Since the nuns get out rarely and transport costs are very high relative to local salaries, Monica turns out to be the transport provider for many of them as they send goods to/from their ...

Over the Mountains to Suceava We Will Go

... me with the info on the one bus and calls to confirm that it will be running. Until this point, I was not even sure that it was possible (without backtracking way South to get around the mountains). Valerie, the only other person at the hostel, is on the same bus. The bus is an experience. It is a 7 hour trip and apparently such luxuries as shock absorbers are skipped. The music is awful, a mix of 50% Romanian folk, 30% urban, 20% euro-pop. The ride itself is beautiful. The ...

Highlights of the Monastic Life

... and where cows and horse-drawn carts are a very common cause of traffic jams on the road. Many of the young men of the region have gone to work in Western Europe and they send money back home which is used to built these new houses, but the old traditional culture is still very much alive in these parts. One wonders though what will happen to this culture when all the young men come back...

Painted Monasteries

... the Humor, Voronet, Moldovita, and Sucevita monasteries. Monika was an excellent tour guide, telling us just the right amount of information to be interesting, but not enough that we got bored. I would highly recommend her services. Driving up one of the foothills, we hit snow. Winter is coming. Here's hoping I can travel south and towards the Adriatic fast enough to hold cold weather off another few weeks.

Vitamins from America !

Hey everyone, It is officially the end of day 2 and I again had the experience of a lifetime. A group of us went to a clinic northwest of Botosani in a village called Mihaeleni (Me Hi Lane). It is on the border of Romania and the Ukraine. When I say onthe border, I mean it. You could walk to the Ukraine in about 5 minutes. We worked there and the 2 docs saw 100+ patients in about 6 hours. We were treated like royalty and met with the mayor ...

Walking 15km through the countryside in the rain??

... I couldn't exactly follow. So I stopped them and asked "which is better for hitchhiking?" The left path, they answered. Off I went. Another kilometer or so passed, and there were still NO cars coming by . . . understandably so, because it was a dirt road and it was pouring rain!! At this point though, I'd gotten myself into such a bind that I really didn't have much choicee but to press on, despite the increasing wind and my equally increasingly wet trousers. The rain did eventually ...

The painted Monastries

... and she told me and I told her. We were going around in circles. Finally, the girl said that it was her flash that went off. The nun said no flash to her, bit no apology to me. Personally, I hope she goes to hell !!!!! As we left, we ran into a couple of Americans who talked us into getting a cab back for all of 0.60 cents. So we did, and that was the end of our first day Moldovita Up first thing as we had to get a train to a town, then another train to this ...

Welcome to Romania! No Bus No Boat No Train!

On Aug 21st I left the good ole USA in search of an Eastern European Adventure! I flew to Bucharest, Romania and...upon arrival...I really had no definite plans...so...when the opportunity arose, I jumped on it! --In a newsstand in the airport I met a Romanian-now-living-in-the-U.S.--we chatted a bit...and...5 minutes later he returned to say I was coming with him and his Business associate (from Michigan)--they were in search of Land ...
