... into the lake where the brave one's ran and jumped into the chilly lake water straight out of the sauna. We enjoyed several camp fire's here sharing in international customs and returned for another night at the end of our few days in the area and enjoyed an international dinner in the lodge. The only down side of the site was the complimentary mosquito sleep over experience it offered guests!

Savonlinna was my next stop in Finland. It is in the middle of nowhere. It's nearly 5 hours from the capital of FInland. I'm not really sure why I came here. I probably saw it on the map and just thought maybe it would be a good stopping point on the way to Helsinki. It was a good point to stop at, but there wasn't much here. There was a very nice castle. ...

... it was entertaining, and fun to walk around, i doubt it rates on many peoples ‘spectacular’ lists. It had an interesting history, and the guide was knowledgable.
Savonlinna is also known for its two lakes which are meant to contain seals. we didnt see any unfortunatly. that night we camped at the man made channel which connected the two lakes, it was one of the best free camp sites we had found on the trip.

... soundproof so with only very small windows we didn't see the spectacular lightning display nor hear the winds. Power was lost during the storm to thousands of homes and the locals could not remember experiencing a storm like it. This was enough to halt our dreams of a canoe trip as trees had fallen over the more narrow sections of waterways making it impassable. However a blessing in the morning - a beautiful clear day!

    Perfect camping!

... day... started the day off with a sauna, went to a forest museum, found a wild raspberry patch and came home to make pancakes for dinner. Then went bushbashing through the forest looking for a good vantage point for a sunset ..... slept well after a very warm day which has been so hazy that it's really like home on a hot summer's day. Have heard that Moscow has huge fires so could be from there...... also heard that rain is coming so must enjoy.
