... to the cityscapes we had been driving through thus far. One of the more popular things to do in Slovakia is hike through the Tatra Mountains. There are locations with almost rainforest-like scenery and wooden ladders left in place for hikers to scramble around various areas. We wouldn't have time to see those sights today since we needed to be in Poland by Saturday and the hikes generally take a full day themselves. The scenery wasn't lost on us though. ...

The mining magnate Thurzo family, who took charge in the mid 16th century, were responsible for a great deal of rebuilding work, although its present form was not finalized until 1611. It burned down again in 1800, after which the Pálffys occupied the castle. And then, after a period of dilapidation and WWII the castle became a national monument.
