Lots to report today. We had one of our best rides yet along the coast from Peschici to Manttinata through Gargano Park. Lots of rolling hills, little traffic and beautiful vistas. Between Manttinata and Manfredonia, our final destination for the day, there only two routes. One is a 2 km tunnel, closed to bikes, and the other is a mountainous road with many switchbacks. This morning got off to a rocky start. We took a "shortcut" which looked extremely promising on the map, however, the dirt road gradually turned into a two track and then a sand path through a swamp which was infested with most of the world's mosquitoes. Who knew mosquitoes loved Italy too? Eventually we pushed the bikes through the soft sand for about a kilometer while fighting off and ingesting the mosquitoes ...
Spent the day catching up on some much deserved rest. Got some sun and finished reading my book, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," by Maya Angelou. I only wish I had WIFI so I could communicate, it's been 3 days now. The ship offers WIFI but it costs $.75 per minute and an additional $4 to activate an account with them.
