Today I had an early whale watching cruise booked so I ate breakfast, checked out of my hotel, and walked down to the harbor. I had never been whale watching before so I was excited to see some whales up close. I boarded a small boat and we sailed west out of the harbor. After a short while we spotted a large group of at least a dozen humpback …

... and took a long walk around the lake, stalked some birds and ducks for a while and at the end of the day took myself to the capitals north to catch a movie. And yes it was a 3 hour return trip (so much for not driving). I think it was worth it I loved Trainwreck but what I love the most is embracing the way others see movies. Left Akureyri and drove around the peninsula to the west. Stopped at Dalvik to see the Hvol folk museum with a special display in Iceland's tallest man who was 7'7" and was for a while the tallest man in the world. On around the coast in pretty thick fog, with some long tunnels (up to 6km) cutting through the mountains. Narrow and with meeting points for passing traffic. Lunch at Hofsos' only restaurant, a burger and ...

... we drove on down the side of the fjord to Akureyrl, Iceland’s second largest city. Fortunately the good people have put a causeway across halfway up the the fjord to shorten the distance, very thoughtful we have to say! Nice town nestled on the shore under a large hill. We drove up to the church; one can’t miss it, its huge and dominates the skyline. Then down the hill to a car park at “The Hof” the local music venue/cultural ...

... here (weeks of seafood chowder in Ireland had to be replaced with another fixation at some point). Akureyri is home to what is reputed to be Iceland's best ice cream shop so DH rushed us over there and elbowed her way to the front of the line. I can't say I was overly impressed with the taste of the 'best' ice cream in Iceland but I would expect that it comes straight out of the Icelandic cow as ice cream so that has to count for something. DH, with excess chocolate smeared on ...
