The Magical Kingdom of Segovia

... all were locked. So he told me get back on the train we’ll stop at the next station. I was so embarrassed; I only wanted to know if there was a toilet not if they could stop the train for me to use one. But at the next station we halted and again I was motioned to get off the train as everyone stared me down in confusion. The ticket man escorted me to the ladies room where a line of three other ladies stood before me. I anxiously tapped my ...

A day in Segovia

... and before we knew it we were underneath the famous Roman aquaduct that extends from the old town like a finger pointing into the distance. We found a park in the the nearby newly built undergound park outside the city walls, and headed for the plaza under the aquaduct. Alongside the old city wall was a tourist centre where we got our bearings along with a map of the town and then headed towards the first cafe we could find for coffee and something to eat (it caters to ...

The first day of our adventure

... ride. It wasn't anything spectacular, just one of many firsts to remember from this trip.

We made our way to the rental car place. Upon arriving at our car, we realized we were going to need a bigger one. They originally gave us a Citroen C2 and it wouldn’t even hold our baggage in the "trunk" area. Plus, it was not going to be comfortable for Conrad to drive. So, we upgraded to a C4 (hoping it wouldn’t explode ...

Excursion to Segovia

... last two cities.

We ate lunch outside of the scenic Alcazar de Segovia (Segovian castle). It was originally an Arab fort, during the Muslim occupation of Spain. It's thought to be built in 1120, though modifications were made for the next 400 years. Huge changes were made when the Christians took over the fort.. It was first made into a fortification against attacks, then a prison...and finally into a residence for the kings of ...

... BUT we realized that Andy had told the girls the wrong train time to go home on so they were booked for a 9:30 train and we were for 6:30. The line was super long and with Vienna being so weak we were kind of in panic mode. I got on the train with her as it was 6:10 and then luckily without changing their tickets the people at the gate let svenja and andy on without seats (they were able to find them no problem). Then we had our quick 20 min train ride home and a great 1 day trip!

Fancy Bridgework

... made all the more so when you realise that not one bit of mortar was used to stick it all together. This does make you wonder how there hasn´t yet been an unfortunate accident, but I´m no Roman engineer and its been standing for a fair few centuries now so I guess it´ll last until at least the European City of Culture thing has been settled. We spent a few lovely days in Segovia mainly trying to figure out how to get to Cuenca ...

... site we visited. It was a large, freezing space to walk around in. There were naves and chapels decorated with sculptures and paintings by famous artists. We were impressed by the Gothic choir stalls and the two massive pipe organs. After a while we also took the time to look at the floor and not just the high ceilings, columns and paintings. We were walking over people's graves. These people had financed the rebuilding of the Cathedral and had won enough favour ...

After the tour was over, the guide suggested we all take the 182 30cm's steps up the Tower of Juan II, into the watchtower for an amazing view of Segovia and its surroundings. My mom, who had already climbed the stairs, chickened out of her second opportunity and said she would wave to us from the courtyard. The snail-like stair case was enclosed in a circular tower which was ...
