Sound of Music: When I last left you, I was heading out to the Sound of Music bus excursion. Smaltzy, but I loved it. 50 years ago, in 1965, the movie was made here in Salzburg (and indoor scenes inside in a Hollywood studio). We went to all the sites of major parts of the film, saw many familiar buildings and recognizable sites, and learned about fact and fiction regarding the Von Trapps. Our guide was an Austrian from Salzburg, who had lived in Boston for 10 years some years ...

With destination and purpose yesterday, I walked down near Mirabell Palace where I knew I could find a good little tour company for getting the lay of the land in Salzburg and surrounds. To my delight, I happened upon the weekly Farmers' Market enroute, which was an amazing experience / such a feast for the senses. The tour company was nearby, I discovered, so after booking a short tour of the city/country, and while I waited for my guide - I ...

... down from a hotel, but some are pretty much like hotels but in very old buildings. A hostel is an approved site through the hostel organization and many require membership: some are only for young people ie students. Many are now taking in older folks too, but they are typically large dorms where you rent a bed, and there is a shower down the hall. Many hostels have a small kitchen where you can prepare your own food, but usually have few amenities. Ours in Switzerland ...

... combo "Sound of Music - Hallstadt Salt Mine" tour. However, we arrive at the station at 8:00 and the tour goes at 8;45-ish. Can we thread this needle? We will see...

We'll, as it turned out, this all came together with the precision of a Swiss watch - We hit the Salzburg hauptbahnhof on the run. Our luggage was dumped in a locker in the station. (more on this later). Then we were off like a dose of salts to find the meeting place for the potential ...
