... Crimea. At once Viktor turned from a slightly scary extra from the "SHINING" into a dictatorial madman who had left his medication at home. No toilet stops seemed to be allowed and "lunch"was to be at 1700hrs. As a result, we had a major shouting match en route as Cathy put her foot down with him. All I can say is beware of an angry Cathy. Several calls to our Travel Agent en route eventually ensured we had accommodation for the night and Viktor deposited ...

... going straight off to the Carpathian's for a full 6hr drive and sightseeing.... 0200hrs. Ukrainian Border Police arrive in cabin and demand passports. 0230hrs much clanking combined with hooters as train is decoupled and wheels changed: 0245hrs Ukrainian Customs burst in checking suitcases. 0330 more crashing about as train staff start preparing for arrival. 0430hrs slump into doze only to be waken by alarm clock ...

... guard activity on the Ukrainian side (see photos), the main delay wasn’t getting out of Ukraine, but getting into Slovakia. Each of the cars in the queue was thoroughly searched, presumably with an eye for cheap Ukrainian cigarettes and vodka for which EU residents would be willing to pay big bucks.

But we finally did emerge in Slovakia, back in the ol’ EU. The roads were certainly better than in Ukraine, but the grim post-Soviet ...

... as to Queen Esther and King Ahasuerus, Monika led us on a tour of Uzhgorod. Of special interest, she pointed out a semi-hidden Star of David framing a high window in an old brick house (see photo). She said that during Soviet times all religious symbols were forbidden. But to demonstrate their faith, Jewish people secretly built six-pointed stars or menorahs into the cobblestone pavement or hid them in the architecture of buildings.
