Infamous History

... Monowitz, which I did not.) Here is the main visitor center where you can figure out exactly what type of tour experience you would like to have. I decided to pony up the $12 for a guided tour, complete with a wireless headphone monitor system set to the frequency of our guide's microphone. As it turned out having a guided tour got me to exactly all the places I needed to be and kept me on pace to finish my visit in a timely manor.

A place of death

... to be given away or sold. As the Russians were at the gates, the warehouses were set on fire. I were told that Canada II was still burning two days after the camp was liberated. Also at Auschwitz I is the only surviving gas chamber. It was "too small" so it had been converted into a storage facility, and thus it was overlooked when things were being destroyed.

Camp I was big, but Camp II, KZ Auschwitz - Birkenau was massive. The grounds, the buildings ...

AUSCHWITZ, POLAND A SAD PART OF ALL OF OUR HISTORY

We knew we would be up early but 6 a.m. was too early. We were told someone was coming here at 5 a.m. to work, but we didn't know what it would be or how noisy. A big truck came in to empty the holding tanks and it is just behind us.

We got out of bed at 7 and it was already warm. Breakfast over we packed up and drove to the parking lot to begin our visit to the Auschwitz Birkenau. German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1940 ...

The Horrors of Our Past

... feel tears welling up inside, and I got out of this room as quick as possible. Auschwitz-Birkenau II is about a 3 km walk down the road, in a more remote area. Walking the road was very saddening for as you looked around, you knew what would be coming up, the closer you got. The entrance, a very well photographed building, is a train station with tracks running through it. Birkenau was probably 10 times larger, although all that stood in most of it was the ...

Auschwitz

... about in school and can't comprehend-it became so much more a part of my life and just so real by seeing it. We saw a film that showed survivors and victims of torture and medical experiments. I saw how the hatred was so strong that so many humans were viewed as less than animals, they were seen as a disease that needed to be purged from the world. Later, as we walked the grounds, our guide told us the ...

... with ash, the memorials- and the showers (the actual showers they used for labourers) and their wall of photographs of various Jewish families- you have to see it for yourself. It was strange, the sun was shining, the sky was beautiful, the fields were green, birds were singing and mountains were visible on the horizon. Which in some ways makes it worse I suppose- there was a grim atmosphere to the whole place, but ...

Pierogies in Poland!

... we all stood taking pics while he ran! After, we went for lunch. I think the people I was with may have thought I was a little crazy as I demanded that wherever we ate, HAD to have peirogies. Anyways, I got them, and I was satisfied. I can go home now! In the afternoon, those of us who had opted to do the Salt mines tour piled on the bus. When we were waiting to descend, a few of us bought cans of pop from a vending machine ...

Krakow

Tuesday 2nd of May 2006 Leaving the Spa town for Krakow. I started the day with a run. It was a lovely day but there were clouds in the valley and as I came down the hill the clouds had followed me up, hiding the town. They soon evaporated. I got ready, said goodbye to my landlady and headed off to the bus station. I was really early just in case there were lots of people wanting to get on it. Another bus turned up which was going to Krakow 40 minute earlier than ...

Tracing the Tragedies of WW II

... various sculptures to pass time. These sculptures are absolutely breathtaking. There are human figures, various kings and queens, the last supper, Jesus and virgin Mary and many others. The tour guide took us 130 feet down to see many beautiful chambers made of salt. They are beautiful. The rock salt is darker than than our regular salt. Because of their immense size and density, sculptures are possible. We wondered through mazes of tunnel and rooms. Accoring to ...
