... like bricks, wood and metal fittings were used by the local population. Minefields surrounding the quarters took 10 years to clear - until 1955. 55 000 mines of various types were removed by Polish sappers.

The Wolf's lair is now an historical museum - out in the open - where you can visit the remains of the buildings. We spent the day having a guided tour of the site and then re-visiting several of the bunkers and also some areas that were not included in ...

... dog box that apparently serves as a ticket office. Here I find another non-English speaking lady who extracts 1.74 euro from me for a ticket – who was it that came up with that pricing! After returning the 400m back to the entrance the old girl waves me through and I find out that the museum is probably only worth 1.74 euro after all. There is no English translation and the exhibits are all a bit ho-hum.

... quite beautiful countryside. The roads in this part of Hungary are in pretty good condition, and for the most part are well sign-posted (to be fair, on our last jaunt in Hungary, we drove a lot in the dark and with our van headlights could see very little on the signs). ... RAF’s programme of Urban-Renewal that ran from 1941-1945, was extremely efficient. They managed to destroy anything of any interest and the Soviets either didn’t rebuilt it or if they did, it was done poorly!
