AM- Wow, woke up to thunder & pouring rain this morning, that should drop the temperature a bit. Tomas says this has been the hottest summer for more than 25 years. Shops, particularly in the Old Town areas, do not have air conditioning and can't cope with hot weather. Tomas headed off for a medical in Klaipeda then his first day at the timber mill in Prusaliai as a fitter, it's 60 kms away! But they are moving out to Kartena shortly and into ...

AM - Today's excursion was to Trakai, a red brick and stone castle on an island in a beautiful lake with surrounding forests. Trakai was where the Karaite people from Crimea settled when brought to Lithuania by Grand Duke Vytatas. There are only a few Karaite people left in Lithuania now. ... Museum and it is highly recommended. In a small city like Klaipeda, things are never that far apart. In 15mins we were there already. In keeping with communism tradition, it looked dark and closed from the outside. Only when we opened the door, waited for 3 minutes, someone came out and sold us the ticket.

... RAF’s programme of Urban-Renewal that ran from 1941-1945, was extremely efficient. They managed to destroy anything of any interest and the Soviets either didn’t rebuilt it or if they did, it was done poorly!
