... either. So that was a failure. Dinner in the hotel again. As it is an Onsen, it is full of Japanese and we are the only foreigners. The Japanese go to the Onsen and then come to dinner dressed in their Yukata plus a blue jacket that goes with it. They don't have pre-dinner drinks. Excitement today as the first trip on the Shinkansen to Nagano up in the mountains where the Winter Olympics were held in 1998. Correct pronunciation is But first we have to do a train transfer from Shinagawa to Tokyo at peak hour! First leg easy as we knew Shinagawa and were surprised to see the station almost deserted, guess it is because most of the commuters are using the Metro. ... people know each other. There's something cleansing (no pun intended) about sitting at a stool in a stall with a low mounted water tap and a plastic pan that you fill with water and drench yourself. I find it quite refreshing and relaxing and many Japanese dream of retiring in a town or home with an onsen facility.

I've not plotted a route for tomorrow yet. Needless to say, judging by the mountains in all the photos, there will be climbing ...

Woke early and caught a taxi to Ueno station. JR Shinkansen to Nagano, then electric train on the Nagano dentetsuline to Yudanaka. Walked up to our accomodation - Shimaya. Mr Yumoto is very helpful. He drove us to the snow monkeys, then we walked 1.6 km through the forest to see the monkeys. They were everywhere, little babies, sitting in the hot spring, picking nits from each other and ...
