... our first swallows of the year. We followed a path alongside the lake which then turned inland into woodland. There were swampy bits in the woodland and we saw great crested newts and some small toads. Exhausted this evening after a full day of walking, but feeling lucky with the weather. We had a couple of hail showers this morning, but otherwise it's been dry, and often warm and sunny. Off to Suwalki on an early bus in the morning, and then planning to cross into Lithuania on ...

... concrete lock with a submarine in it. The guide had talked about the canal and lock but they didn't realise it still existed. We hotfooted it back to the hostel to do some research. Willow managed to find an arial photo of the lock. We had a really exciting journey as in the 12 miles there there were 6 sets of very long road works. But the hostel was clean, and you could buy bottles of beer from the grumpy security man in the evening. I enjoyed sitting in the foyer writing up my diary in the company of a troupe of Danish bikers. And best of all, the Wolf's Lair was rocked by an enormous thunderstorm. I like thunderstorms in evocative sites.
Our guide had alluded to strange and worrisome goings-on in the hostel, but we slept the night ...

Having gone to bed very late to make use of the beautiful room they than got up early to go to the Baltic Sea. The city is not right by the sea but there are lots of docks there as Gdansk has been a port for hundreds of years.
The roads were very quiet and we saw lots of cranes looking like herds of mechanical giraffe.
a cup of tea was had and Ed got lots of information from some very ...

... terrible law breakers out here. Bonnie and Clyde, to be sure.
Once we evaded the clutches of the law, we resumed our ever eastward journey to the Wolf's Lair, though rather more gingerly than before.

Upon arrival, we were immediately struck by the advanced tourist business here. Big signs, logos, barriers to get in, large information boards, grumpy security men, a big car park, several coaches and big crowds. Private enterprise has unashamedly taken hold of ...
