Kathmandu

Kathmandu, only one thing I can say chaos !!! It is like what you would expect to see in a turn of the last century film with an English Gentleman in India. Small narrow dirt streets with rickshaws and masses of people...... We got to Nepal to meet with the rest of our expedition team and to get our equipment. We even had equipment hand made of us and it was so cheap..... Our logistics manager, managed Ric************s round the world attempts and we where staying in the "Tibet Hotel" where v...

Kathmandu - First Impressions

Just arrived in Kathmandu - what an amazing place. Flew in from London via Bahrain. It is Ramadan - so at Bahrain airport the coffee shops and snack bars were virtually deserted. I had been told that if you are travelling it is OK to eat and drink during the daytime in Ramadan - but apart from a few western passengers everyone else in the airport seemed to be abstaining. Great flight from Bahrain to Kathmandu - I managed to get a window seat on the left hand side of the plane - so some fantas...

Kathmandu

Walk towards central Kathmandu down one of the main streets, Kantipath. The road is busy - but the traffic fumes are not as bad as I had been led to believe. Every few yards a taxi or cycle rickshaw pulls up and asks if I want a lift - but I prefer to walk. Passing the Royal Palace there are lots of huge, noisy fruit bats in the tree tops. I turn off the main street down one of the many narrow side streets. The smells are incredible - spices, fruits and leather mixed with a bit of two-stroke ...

Swayambunath and Patan

We start the day by visiting Swayambunath - the temple up on the hill above Kathmandu. The first thing you notice as you arrive is that the whole hillside appears to be covered in prayer flags. Swayambutnath is also known as the 'Monkey Temple' - and we had been warned to keep a tight hold of sunglasses, cameras, etc, just in case one of the monkeys decided to pinch them. We did see a few monkeys - but they seemed quite shy. None of them came close enough to pinch anything. (Perhaps they just...

Kathmandu

On one of my first few days in Kathmandu, I studied yoga with Akhil Bhattacharya and met a wonderful couple from Spain, Jesus and Leticia. We had a wonderful vegetarian lunch each day prepared by Sahtti, Akhil's wife. I spent a few days in Boudhanath, walking the kora and sitting in on the Westerner talk on Saturday with Chogyi Nyima Rinpoche in the Sheto (white) Gompa.

Kathmandu has not really changed much. The noise, pollution, people, animals, power outages, sights, smells and soun...

lessons learnt!

... I discovered the undefined sauce was in fact the dal (I thought it was gravy!!) a big disappointment as it tasted a bit salty and that was it. The chicken looked fine....cut into small cubes and in some kind of sauce. Guess what......looks can be deceiving! Anyone who knows me well will know that one of my pet hates is picking out bones, so imagine my surprise at finding the nice chicken cubes were in fact random parts of a chicken complete with various parts of its ...

Then I tried to extend my visa but it was not going to happen today. After unsuccessfully trying to find a few little things in the market, I gave up and went home where I lay in bed writing, and eating apples and Polish Katarzynki (chocolate covered ginger bread cakes ...

... were thankfully really caring and nice to the kiddies.

Oh and as for the cute little boy with the beautiful dimpled smile? Today he was wearing a dress. It's a girl! Lol. She is absolutely beautiful, smiles all the time, hugs me and everyone else, and even comforts the babies when they cry. Her name is Sonka with a soft n sound. For the Polish people reading this, it is the exact diminutive name in Polish, for Sonya. I wonder if cute Sonka could be smuggled... :)
... out. It was interesting because several members of her family - her mom, uncle, and cousin- have clubbed feet as well. I'm becoming familiar with a lot of common orthopedic conditions- it's all new to me so I find it all very interesting. I've made friends with some of the nurses. Two of them are nurses who are monks. Their monastery is located near the Boudha Stupa. They said I should come over one day and chill. ** As always, look at my facebook albums for pictures... ;)
