Today was somewhat of a free-day. Britta and Joachim decided to take us back to the base of the Harz Mountains, this time to a little town called Quedlinburg. Much like Wer*****ode, the wood-framed homes are beautifully colored and there are flowers everywhere. The entire town smells of roses.

Our first stop was the Abbey Church of St. Servatius. The Abbey holds a great historical significance and ...

Absolutely wonderful day in Wer*****ode. This quintessential German town dates back to 1121 and sits at the base of the Harz Mountains. The quaint and vibrant buildings helped the city earn its nickname as the "colorful town of the Harz."

Our first stop was to the castle on the hill. I think Michael was trying to kill us…as we had to walk up the mountain to get there. You know you're out of shape when the old people ...

We left pretty soon after we arrived as we were tired and hungry, worried about the van functioning, and still had 90 or so miles to ...

... was closed. Also on the door was an announcement that William and Kate had had a baby daughter! Museum possibly run by English folk or at least Anglophiles?

We then set off to visit the actual dam. We found a nice lakeside tourist/sailing resort, but once again no reference to ...

What a great region this Harz region is! I have fallen in love with Germany! All this time it was right next door but it took me 40 years to really discover it. (After already being in love with Berlin but that cannot be compared.)

I'd highly recommend this region, and Quedlinburg, the hikes and the DDR Museum to anyone, young or old (even though most visitors to this region are old, or young couples with kids).
