What a great region this Harz region is! I have fallen in love with Germany! All this time it was right next door but it took me 40 years to really discover it. (After already being in love with Berlin but that cannot be compared.)

I'd highly recommend this region, and Quedlinburg, the hikes and the DDR Museum to anyone, young or old (even though most visitors to this region are old, or young couples with kids).

    ... rocks.
In another part you actually walk on top of the rocky ridge, in a foresty bit. After much deliberation I wanted a challenge and some active exercise, and decided upon the hike on top of the ridge.

    Rain was predicted.

I walked around all the little hidden streets of Quedlinburg, climbed a watchtower, had coffee at a cute cafe.

Walked around some more at random and through parts I had not seen yet.

It started to rain, so I sat in a cafe for an hour or so reading and having big beer. Very pleasant and leisurely day, waiting for a dry day to do another forest / mountain hike. ...

... town. And since the houses in general weren't as pretty as the ones in Quedlinburg, I decided to cut my visit to the town short, and just see the castle on the hill.

Just like tonnes of other people I bought a cheap umbrella.

Climbed up to the Wer*****ode castle. I had wanted to take the silly little 'kiddy train' up but it was ...

    Quedlinburg: 1300 fachwerk houses

I am so glad I chose to stay in this town, it is so beautiful and peaceful!
I got recommendations in a forum and the apartment in Quedlinburg was the nicest-looking, right in the center in an old half-timbered house, and affordable.

On Tuesday I went to the fachwerk museum. Interesting to read about that profession because my ancestors in the 18th century built half-timbered houses. ...
