A Day (or two) in the Life of Benita

... But I carefully picked my way down towards my objective, I put my hand down the next time the waves hit home, just happy to be here, to be touching this alien object, to revel in the sea! I turned around, to see Greg snapping pictures of the horizon and the landscape around us, just in time to be over taken by a wave and washed ashore as my pants, that I thought I'd hiked up enough were tinged with the sure sign of being conquered! I burst out laughing reach down to ...

Back to the Roots

... family, and seeing the little things that remind me of family. True to Italian/Family form, I am here, being loved and cared for just as if they've known me all my life. (I have arrived at my Zio/Uncle Ciccio's home in Sant'Onofrio in Calabria). But comes with the good, here is where frustration lies for me. Why do I focus so ******* what people are trying to share with me, to the point of giving myself a splitting ...

... of teenage girls sitting in their chairs outside their homes doing lacework just chatting away and we couldn't help but comment about how young they were. We expected to see older ladies sitting there doing that, but we suspect tradition is fully imbued in their normal daily activities in San Giorgio. We walked all of the way up to the medieval castle at the top of the town and noticed an incredible amount of construction work. It seems as ...

... and needy. We then drive right across Italy to the other side, which is actually not that far, and visit Pompei. It is a fantastic site - a whole Roman town, incredibly well preserved, considering it was destroyed 2000 years ago (along with Herculaneum and a couple of other smaller towns) Houses, fast food shops, temples, baths, brothels, the whole layout of the town is there (with Vesuvius, it's destroyer looming close by) - your imagination can provide the rest. We try ...

Tropea - I had no idea!

... times. Of course we were curious to see this place as it was all very matter of fact. So up we went, and found a beautiful site overlooking the country and sea with an open air church and two fenced in squares stating the exact dates when Jesus appeared there. Very unusual and for me very strange and rather funny - I can't imagine ever seeing a sign like that in Australia that's for sure!

The Hunt for the La Praia Hotel

... search we stopped off at a gas station to ask for directions. The directions that Danielle managed to piece together pointed us in the direction north of the city and off we went, we did manage to find a hotel, but it was not the La Praia. One turn led to another and soon we found ourselves in the heart of the old streets of Tropea, barely wide enough for our small Ford Festiva to fit in. At one point we stopped ...

With the family in CALABRIA! Sant'Onofrio & more
