Got up and had breakfast in hotel. Bread toast orange coffee. Lovely breakfast. Drove through beautiful mountains to Grenoble and then onto Annecy. Got hotel Best Western. Lovely room. Bought milk in Spar and food in garage. . Went for walk to old town. Had creeps. Cold Walked and sat by lake. Back to hotel. Lovely ...
... is I've got none left for tomorrow. There again it must be easier going down. The hospice I am staying in tonight, which is right on the pass, has been in continuous use by pilgrims since 1050. Staffed partly by lay volunteers some of whom I shared dinner with. I suspect that there isn't a chef amongst them because the food was dire. Still, Italy is only about 100 yards away so I've great hopes for tomorrow ...

... about 10 miles from Verbier, a well-known skiing area. As usual it took a ridiculously large amount of effort to get somewhere to sleep. No surprise that there was no-one in the religious house. No campsite here so I went berserk and booked into the only B and B. There something about being soaked and cold that just puts me off wild camping. Nice dinner was a bonus. Could sort of justify both by the big climb tomorrow up to the Italian border at the Great St Bernard's ...
