        Hallstatt, Austria's hidden gem

... to expect of the tour, but were extremely surprised with how detailed and entertaining it was. Immediately entering the tour, we were given miners clothes to put on. Then there was a large room with extra large pictures of the mine throughout the centuries and what life was like to be apart of it. Our tour guide then walked us 300 meters (nearly 1000 feet) into the mine through a deep tunnel in the mountain. We learned all about how the salt was deposited billions of years ago when a ...

... remember our new friends. We sat and visited with them outside one of the quaint cafes and discovered he was a retired school counselor. We emailed the photo of us together to them when we got back to the hotel.
Some of the most interesting places we visited in Hallstatt were the very old churches, the very tiny, but well-kept cemetery high up the side of the mountain, and the bone house at the back of the cemetery. ...

Day 25 - Bruck to St Johann

... off - the first time for a couple of weeks. I even had to hunt for my sunglasses, a treat indeed. Driven indoors when the sun set, we had a light evening meal. Well not too light, for me at least, after another dose of cake. No piccies today. We've seen dozens of creative scenes constructed with straw, mostly people and animals, all at the roadside so not easy to photograph while on the move. Mileage: ...

... in a complex with many others, dropped off our bags and went to tour Hallstatt. We both thought that it reminded us a bit of Leavenworth but with a very large lake bordering the village. Very touristy with what seemed like hundreds of Asian tourists. Most seemed very young and of course snapping pictures of everything. There was one woman taking pictures of the shelves at the grocery Store, What's up with that?

Tiny town nestled between the water and mountain

We do go from one extreme to another. This town is super tiny. It's here because salt used to mean big money and they had a salt mine. We will ride another funicular up the side of a mountain (a recurring theme with us) tomorrow to tour the mine. It was closed by the time we got to it today.
We left early and walked to the underground station which was literally 3 minutes from our hotel. So awesome we have small suitcases to ...
