Thimphu, Thimphu, Bhutan druk123... pass marked the point of crossing over the first of 3 mountain ranges we would cover today, and offered a stunning view of the snowcapped Himalayas all the way to the Chinese border, including the 7,200m giant that was Bhutan;s highest mountain. Our next stop was a town in a lovely tropical valley called Lobesa, where we had lunch after visiting the temple of the 'divine madman', a favourite local saint known for his crazy ...
Wangduephodrang, Bhutan srossb1971... to fight the current and get over to the left side of the crowd, and get solid footing. I had lost Kitty and Sonam in the melee, and so I found a vantage point to spot them. It took a few minutes, but we were able to reunite (thanks to the fact that we stood somewhat taller than the locals). Given that we were tourists, the stadium ushers pulled us aside from the crowds and escorted us to a section reserved for tourists, which was ...
Thimphu, Bhutan srossb1971... my favourite place to visit, where circumambulation of the stupa by monks, locals and tourists occurs (in a clockwise direction, of course), with spinning of prayer-wheels. We also visited the Emporium to do some shopping - it seems all stops have been removed as we visit our final country before home; we better stop soon or we won't be able to carry it all!! Tomorrow we visit Paro and hike to Tiger's Nest, so it's time to get some sleep. Home soon.
Thimphu, Bhutan fifoota... country in the Himalayas !!! Now the drive is meant to take around two and a half hours, but I slept for about two of it, which is a little bit of a downer as I am missing all these mountain views. We kept going up, until we arrived at our first site Gangtey Gompa It's another huge old manastery, which had just been restored and the head Lama had consecrated it last week. Well, only the temple has been restored, and all around the ...
Wangduephodrang, Bhutan uncle_davros... off we went, and 28 minutes of power walking, we had arrived. All around were little stupas, and in the large one, there were the usual Bhuddist images and paintings. These were spread over four floors, and as an added bonus, you could go on to the roof, and the views were great. Mountains all around and a river at the bottom of the valley. No pollution, what more could you want ??? On the way down, we got stuck behind a group of Blamers, so it took ages, but not ...
Punakha, Bhutan uncle_davros... We actually arrive in Bangkok a half hour early, and end up waiting for our guide to pick us up. The trip to the hotel, and check-in, goes smoothly. We all meet for cocktails in the executive lounge at 6pm, then walk to the farewell dinner at 7pm. I have selected a gay-owned restaurant near the hotel, and the menu is absolutely ...
Paro, Bhutan wareameye... to the gleeful men wielding the mighty phallus that enhanced f**tility was not my definition of good fortune at this point in my life and that, really, I'd be quite happy with a cat. Naturally this elicited loud guffaws all round as the gath**ing crowd slapped each oth** on the back, shaking their heads at the strange ways of the foreign woman. I had unexpectedly found myself at a tiny village festival in the ...
