Looking for 'something to do' on a very low budget...intrigued my the idea of being silent and having read Holy Cow I signed myself up to a 10 day Vipassana course. I believed it must be fate when the first course I tried for didn't go ahead. Then an e-mail confirming my attendance would be most welcome in Kolkata made me physically scream and laugh at what I was getting myself into.

A quick round up of what we have done includes Kolkata..where a new experience awaits you down every street, Hyderabad...which was another big, loud city with some beautiful biriyani, Bidar which was a bit of dust bowl and where I begun to detest Indian men who just stared and stared and wanted to put their arms around me and take photos...too much!...but the town did have a lovely old fort ...
Those who read about our adventures in getting to Darjeeling, you must agree travel Karma owed us. We didn't expect it to happen so soon, but luckily it did. We checked out of our hotel just 2 mins before a share taxi picked us up for the ride down the mountain. The drive from Darjeeling to the plains of northern India is pretty intnse. Steep drops, tight turns, and ...
Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India arikandcharis... land, we are greeted by a small gathering of men led by Kripa Sindudas, a school headmaster and teacher who is revered throughout Gosaba. Kripa worked relentlessly for 2 years convincing the locals, who were extremely cynical and resistant to anything new at the time, to form the Mission's first Self Help Groups in the area. We are led along a typical, brick path on a elevated mud walkway for about 5 minutes before we arrive at a compound of pristine, very high ...
Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India globalgrammaSunday, January 4th. A long quiet morning. Journal writing about my intentions for the coming year and the next four months in India, I slipped naturally into prayer and meditation. Flowing in the stream of grace and light as I have yearned to for so long, with the possibilities of the life of my soul reawakening, all of the hard and frustrating, seeming endless tasks and expensive complications of remodeling one home, moving temporarily, then remodeling a second home before I ...
Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India globalgramma... tend to worship one Lord over the other, all three are vital to Hinduism and are central to one of the main themes of reincarnation or the circle of life. Much of North India are Shaivites - worshipping Shiva as their main Lord. Shiva's consort/wife goes by many names Parvathi/Durga/Kali and Kolkata is a major Durga/Kali (angry version) worshipping city. Shiva's children are Ganesha (protector from obstacles), Lakshmi (goddess of wealth), Saraswati ...
Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India chiapoeCheers everyone! First off, some wonderful news. My brother and sister-in-law just found out that they're having a boy in March. So the Eggener name will live on!! They've decided to name him Jared Drew. I've already expressed to them that when I hear that name I immediately think of Subway Jared. Please feel free to send any suggestions of names my way and I'll pass on the ones I like to them :) Congrats ...
Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India jeneggener... you, and you have watched me show up here, in front of you with no means of transport other than this vhan, therefore, I must have come here by means of this vhan." People would blink their eyes over and over again, attempting or wanting to understand this concept, but they somehow often appeared unable to understand and unable to believe it. Sometimes I was able to watch a mans face as he came to the moment of understanding of this ridiculous ...
