I reluctantly left the tranquility of Honey Valley Estate early that morning and the jeep painfully made its way down the track with the dog running all the way down with us - he even stayed with me for a whole hour until the bus came even though his owner had taken the jeep back up the hill - so it's true dogs are (wo)man's best friend! There were no seats on the bus back to Madikeri so I hung on for dear life. Then followed a 4.5 hour agonising ride on another bus on a very bad road where I...
Udupi, India dynamite_dinah... at work. The rest of Udupi involved eating and nothing else: fried plaintain chips, pav bhaji (little fried dumplings) with coconut sambol, butterscotch ice cream, murruku (like the big fat bits you get in 'bombay mix'), south Indian 'meals', more iddli, and of course masala dosas. Obviously this wasn't all in one go, dear no, not even Paul and I could manage that. Everything was suitably delicious and there wasn't a meal exceeding a pound for both of us. So Udupi had lived up to its name.
Udupi, India sim_armitt... scene, one of them moved - him being the porter - and he woke up the receptionist, who blearily checked us in. It was then Sumi realised they had a 24 hour check in policy, something we had heard of, but so far had not experienced. We double checked that this was the case, and they said yes, we would have to leave by the same time the next morning. I can understand sort of, but surely for us to leave at 4am, he would have to be ...
Manipal, India mlovholmBack in Goa, had a bad flight returning to Sri Lanka from Thailand because there was a bomb scare at Colombo airport. We were less than an hour away and the plane was diverted to South India. All ok after 3 hours waiting on a runway, drinking all the soft drinks. Back to Goa life, I have been staying in the same small apartment for 2 and half years. I must be the best tenant ever. Despite all the loud dogs barking and birds squarwking ...
GOA, India julia... me as the strange lone foreign girl. But hey lying under a coconut tree wrapped in a tablecloth is a bit weird so if they did think this it's a reasonable opinion. The next few days were spent in and out of the hospital. I had the usual vomming and diarrohea and the indian medical system's answer was to give me another in-the-muscle bum injection and make me take 17 tablets a day. The nausea and runs went but for a whole week I had a huge pregnant style belly.
Goa, India cruisekate... and covered in litter, especially the beach. However, in its favour is a Baskin Robbins ice cream parlour. We also visited the nearby town of Margao, which for Goa is very like a traditional Indian town, -- all dusty and busy. There's an indoor market there, which is smelly and crowded but I managed to get some fabric for a dress I had made in Benaulim -- a copy of a Topshop smock I'd bought in London. It wasn't a very active holiday, but it was really memorable ...
Benaulim, Goa, India billingsatlarge... delight food poisoning has finally caught up with me, but it also got Adam again as well. Adam was actually sick for a day or so and i only got bought down for about 6 hours so i didn't really bother me but lets just say i don't want a full dose of sickness. Been doing some fishing off the rocks in goa with great fishing rigs. A beer bottle as a spool about 30m of nylon and hook, still no fish but very relaxing. After getting lost ...
Goa, India hastie... near-death experiences on these roads. At one curve, a motorist, obvoiusly in a hurry and wanting to risk his life passing on a curve came up behind. I pulled over a bit to the left, as is the custom, and motioned him to go around. Of a sudden I felt the back of my bike shift a little. He had actually nicked me, and had I been on a lesser piece of steel than the Enfield, I would probably been vulture meat. I shot him a look as he passed, and he gave me that old ...
Palolem, India bloomer... Phew !!! Our final train journey lasted a picturesque six hours and filled us with regret that we had run out of time and could not explore the waterways of Kerala. A tuk tuk took us to the cheap YWCA Hotel (all that we could afford with the rupees that we had left) in the heart of the City of Trivandrum. Our brief stay here was uneventful as it was a Sunday and most things were closed, therefore we wrote postcards and left early the next morning for an early flight to Colombo.
