    ... not ideal for cycling. For that reason, I've chosen October as the preferred month although it was cold in the mountains of Nagano (but not a problem if you're dressed for it). (October is also harvest time for apples, grapes and persimmons which makes for deliciously fresh fruit.)     After returning to the inn from yesterday's monster climbs, I was too bagged to write and I am now in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture on the last leg of my tour.

    For yesterday's ride, I had planned a route that would take me over two mountains on the same side of the valley as the inn.
