Acclimatizing in Jaisalmer

Hello from India! We are acclimatizing well and absolutely loving Jaisalmer, a small quiet (for India) city in the Northwestern part of the country, near the Pakistani border. We're staying a beautiful sandstone carved haveli named Hotel Suraj. Highly recommended. A haveli is a 500+ year old rich merchant's home that is finely cared sandstone and filled with small archways, balconies, and spacious rooms. Our hotel is inside the old fort, which is at the center of the city. The setting is idyl...

Jaisalmer

This morning we drove to Jaisalmer, the golden city. As the miles go by, the land is getting flatter and dryer. It is mostly sand by the time we arrive in Jaisalmer only to find the walled desert city shimmering above the hard sand. We are staying in the fort and its tiny streets in a haveli. Havelis are old rich merchant houses. It looks very unusual and very rustic. The salesmen in the streets are really funny and are constantly looking for clever ways to attract you into their shops. We en...

If we stopped for chai we were quickly surrounded by people who came to see us and was bombarded with questions about where we were from and wanted to see photos of them wearing our sunglasses etc. I have no doubt that despite us being here for the experience, we were the ones providing the entertainment. ... there via blue plastic, swan shaped pedal bikes, very romantic indeed. Once we got a closer look in we agreed that the couple were about 15 years of age and way too young to get married, it appeared to be an arranged partnership between the families. We did a good walk through the bazaar where people were working away in little workshops making wood carvings or sewing. I watched a lady have her old, chunky silver bangles removed from her wrists using plyers ...
